inside light comes on, turntable comes on, no unusual noises

  • lawsky1 Oct 26, 2008

Normally, there is a faint thump about a second or two after the oven starts, then the lights in the kitchen dim- I can tell the oven is heating. Now, right after the thump, there is a faint click and the kitchen lights do not dim. The oven doesn't heat, although it runs to the end of the time.

I have a GE 1100watt microwave. My Microwave comes on, light is on, and turntable moves. It's a bit louder than usual but no heat. The room lights do not dim when power in on. The water is still cold after 8 minutes.

When you hit Start to cook, do the inside light and turntable come on?

    Any unusual noises?

Is it louder or quieter than usual?

These answers will help me judge whether it's in the high voltage
section (magnetron, transformer, or diode) or the control section
(door switch or control board relay or connection).

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

Otherwise, I would suspect you have a loose connection at the magnetron or a bad magnetron, high voltage transformer or diode.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/xformer.html

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

The first thing I would suggest is to turn off the breaker or unplug it from the wall for a few minutes to "reset" it, then try again. If a reset doesn't fix it, I would think you may have a defective magnetron. When you heat something of very low moisture content, it can lead to microwave energy not being fully absorbed, but instead being reflected back to the magnetron. This can damage it. This is usually best left to a pro to repair. In case it might help, your owner's manual can be found online at: http://products.geappliances.com/ProdContent/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SKUOBJECTS&DOCUMENT=Use%20and%20Care%20Manual&SKU=RVM1425BA

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a minute, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

If you don't have your owner's manual, you can download it free from GE/Hotpoint.

Power level 10 would be the default - what it is set to unless you manually set it lower.

Power level 0 (zero) is often the setting to use if you just want to use the oven as a timer.

Many Emerson microwave owner's manuals are available for free download here.

Would that answer your inquiry?

SOURCE: yesterday microwave worked fine today it doesnt

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

SOURCE: Microwave won't heat anything

Yeah, it's time to invest in a new oven. The magnetron tube in yours most likely just finally wore out. It's the source of the microwaves, and like any tube it gets weaker with age and finally just quits altogether. It would cost more for a new magnetron than it would for a new oven these days.

How do you set the power level

If you have a power level button---press it and then enter 1-0 for 10. Most microwaves automatically come on at power level 10 or Hi power unless you pick a different option like the defrost button which is usually power level 3.

Temperature at 10 power level

It does not work that way. The microwave OVEN generates (electromagnetic) microwaves that are absorbed by the molecules of the food in the oven, the container and the air.
The absorption rate depends on the molecular composition. After enough microwave energy is absorbed the overall temperature increases and the food is warmed, heated or cooked. If your mixture is inhomogeneous some parts absorb more energy while other absorb less and you can have hot spots.

The power level by itself won't give you an indication of the temperature because you need to know the time that the power has been applied. In simple terms Energy =time*power. The temperature reached is somewhat proportional to the energy, that makes it dependent on the time and the power.

Everything works fine, except my food is still cold

Check the "power" level setting.

Most microwaves allow adjusting the power level from 1 to 10 (or 10 to 100 on some models). 10 (or 100) is the highest/quickest setting.

I can check mine by entering a time...then before pushing "start"....push the "power" button....and change the level if I want.

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes.

Instruction Manual for Sharp Microwave Oven

I can explain that. You enter the power level you want from 0 to high(10) the number corresponds to a percentage of time the cook cycle is ON. 5 being 50%, for each minute of cook time programmed the magnatron will be on 30 seconds and off 30 seconds. You can program anything from 10% to 90% in place of the high or "always on" setting. Eric
