Question about Whirlpool Gold 24 in. Built-In Dishwasher Dishwasher

Open Question

GU1200XTKQ0 doesn't clean

I have a Whirlpool GU1200XTKQ0 that has a food chopper that keeps getting clogged with food particles which consequently causes the dishwasher stop cleaning the dishes. I have cleaned the chopper screen on 2 occasions and that seems to fix the problem for about a week or two. As a result of this problem, we have been more diligent in rinsing the dishes prior to loading them into the dishwasher but that hasn't stopped the chopper screen from getting clogged with food particles. Do you have any ideas on what needs to be done to keep the food chopper from getting clogged? Do I need to replace the chopper? Do I need to replace the motor or whatever it is the chopper is attached to? Any ideas you might have would be appreciated. Thanks

SOURCE: where to clean the food out

A dishwasher cleaner may help. It usually is for lime deposits but it still may break the stuff down enough to flush it out. Wal-Mart or an appliance store should have it.

You need to clean the 2 rotors properly and that also includes the sieve. Make sure once the dishes are stacked, the rotors must turn freely by hand.

SOURCE: Does not get dishes etc. clean no matter how

Hi,

This is a good washing machine if it is working properly. There could be a couple things that have happened to make this not work well. You should not have to pre-wash or rinse anything, just scrape and load.

First thing is look below the bottom rack, there is a ring that looks kinda like a horseshoe. This is the heat element. If it is dark in color you are okay, if it is white then it may be coated in hard water deposits, if this is the case that means the inside of the pump and wash arms are plugged up too. If so all you need to do is clean it out using a dishwasher cleaner. Here are some good ones that you can find at the store near the detergents, follow the directions on the label. Lemi Shine, Rinse aid dishwasher cleaner, finish dishwasher cleaner, Glisten. Here is a link to a few more details on that.

The second thing and most common is a plugged sump, debris can restrict the water flow to the pump. I have put together some instructions on cleaning this out. Follow the link below and let me know if this helps.

Water left in the bottom of the dishwasher, after a full cycle.

Hi
This issue usually occurs due to kinked drain pipe, clogged drain filter or drain pump. First make sure that the drain is not clogged and remove clogs if present. If no visible lint is present then remove the lower front access panel to check the drain filter and drain pump for any clogs, you'll need to clean the drain filter and drain pump completely. Also, check for any food pieces stuck near the pump impeller & clean the chopper assembly. Please note that dishwashers don't drain out the complete water such that heating element doesn't overheat. Hope this helps... Please post back for any further assistance.

The top rack does not get clean. There is a dirty

Most likely the "food grinder" screen is clogged, which limits the flow throught the pump, leaving thehigher dishes unwashed. It's flaw inthe design of whirlpool/kitchenaides. Not only does the screen clog but the teeth on the "grinder" wear down, the girneder does no grinding, and the food particles build up onthe screen, clogging the water flow. Open up the collector, pul out he choer/grinder and clean the screen. Check the teeth on it and if worn, repalce the chopper/grinder. If it happens again , then the choper/grinder driving mechanism is basd -- replace the pump/motor assembly.

well you should have water up to the heating element. if there is more than likly your chopper is the culprate. do you make sure that there isn't big food particles on your dishes because that is a lot of stress on that chopper and that is what helps in the recurculation of the water to the top rack. and to clean out your dispenser.
So did you recently turn the main water supply off? if so by turning it back on that shoots a bunch of dirt particles throught the lines. So if you are not getting enough water it is probably because of your inlet valve being clogged with dirt and sand. clear that out it should solve the problem.

Noisy motor

It could very well be the wash pump motor starting to fail. It could also be something as simple as food and debris clogging the intake to the pump. The main wash pump is used to circulate water during the wash cycle. If the intake to this pump is clogged with debris, it can exhibit louder than usual noise during operation and lower water pressure. This particular model also has a chopper assembly just prior to the pump intake. This chopper can dice up some food particles, but cannot process things like popcorn kernels, tough pieces of meat, celery, etc. Basically, anything hard, fibrous, or tough. If you go to searspartsdirect.com, theres an illustration of the pump assembly under the "Pump and Motor Parts" heading. The chopper is item(s) number 6 & 8. If anything gets caught in the chopper it will not provide enough water flow for the main wash pump. Double check the pump sump reservoir and make sure it is all clean. If it still exhibits the same symptoms, the motor may be damaged. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Could be a a couple different issues.. Not filling with enough water or food chopper broke or food chopper filter screen clogged.

Check water level:
Run the DW and wait for the main wash to start (water will fill. pause then complete fill) The water should be no more than 1/4 inch below the heating element. If not there..replace water inlet valve.

Inspect food chopper:
Remove lower spray arm and rear water supply tube to upper spray arm. Remove torx screws that secure the sump cover. Remove the rounded cover on the left side to expose the chopper assembly. Inspect for breakage of blockage. There may be an additional plastic screen to remove first.

Food particles remain on dishes

This was fixed on my unit by taking out the chopper assembly and cleaning the screen. There is full spray on top now. The screen on the chopper assembly actually had some plastic on it that was hard to see, but was blocking most of the holes. Since this was blocked, the pump couldn't pull enough water to push it to the upper spay arms. My chopper was actually broken so it wasn't clearing the screen, so I had to replace it. That will probably help prevent this from happening again, but if you ask me, the unit was designed poorly for handling normal debris that comes off of plates. I'd recommend inspecting this regularly to keep it clean.
