My dell computer lcd monitor and printer were taken out by a power surge I had the power suppy replaced in the cpu but want to fix the lcd. Anybody know how to get the back off a Dell E196FPf LCD monitor and what to look for ( from a power surge)
thanks Heath [email protected]
On the back side unscrew everything you can unscrew, then using flat screwdriver with 1/4" wide blade try to disconnect halves of plastic case, there are plastic fixers over the edges, inside, so try to not brake them all :) Next, you will need to unscrew metal cover inside to get access to the PCBs. If monitor was killed by surge, most likely you will see what is fried there. Check fuse on the PCB.

If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on: Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/ Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.
Or www.digikey.com just make sure to use caps with low ESR, 105c, high ripple current, long life rating such as PANASONIC FM or FC series. Please leave rating if it helps.
On my Dell 19 inch LCD Monitor, E196FPf, there are 4 screws on
the back, and you need to pry off the plastic bezel from the front. At
the bottom of the bezel are 4 small slots where you can start prying
carefully with a screwdriver.
i believe you may have answered your own question here because what you are stating is a malfunctioned monitor if you plugged other monitors to the cpu and they worked and the monitor in question is not working maybe it was a storm surge and since it did not have a surge protector then maybe the monitor is shot and you may need to replace the monitor...
It seems the problem my not be to involved. 1st. Did you take the monitor apart.? If so, you should back track and find what you had missed. 2nd. If you had not taken the unit apart after the power surge, you will more than likely have to, in order to repair your monitors problems. 3rd. This will most differently require the removal of power supply and the replacement of 5 to 8 Capacitors. 4th. If you are not experienced in the replacement of electronic items on a printed circuit board, Please do not attempt this repair..... 3rd. If the unit has any kind of warranty, you may want to pursue a warranty repair. Do Not Tell Reps. That You Had A Power Surge. No electronic equipment is covered under Power Surge Faults. If you do feel confidant in the removal and replacement of these items, please reply to me here or at my website and I will explain in detail, how to get to and remove supply and what to look for in repair.
Are You using a extention cord or a ups that is not funtioning properly....?? if yes try connecting the power for the monitor seperately or directly to a plug base...
this mi8 solve ur problem
generally dell monitors open from the bottom they have slight indented flat spaces for a small flat head screw driver to twist and pop the frame apart I start on the bottom left and work my way right and then open the sides carefully and last the top. Please rate if helpful
Disconnect and reconnect both ends of the video cable (while the computer and monitor are both off). Also disconnect and reconnect the power cable. Is the power cable plugged into the same surge protector as the computer? And also try a different outlet on the surge protector for the monitor.
On my similar Dell 19 inch LCD Monitor, E196FPf, there are 4 screws on
the back, and you need to pry off the plastic bezel from the front. At
the bottom of the bezel are 4 small slots where you can start prying
carefully with a screwdriver.
