Question about Panasonic PT-47WX49 47" Rear Projection Television

Shuts Down Immediately When Turned On

Can you help ? Seems like a lot of people have this problem. The set worked fine for years and all of a sudden started this. There are no blinking lights and I did unplug the set - once for 2 days with no results, and once for 6 weeks while I was out of town, also with no results. The set is actually listed as model PT47WX49SE if that makes any difference. I really like the set and would hate to have to give it up. There are no repairmen listed for my area and I would have to find a way to transport it over 250 miles to the nearest other town (in Alaska). I am relatively fearless when it comes to sticking my hands into something to repair it, as long as I have instructions. The last 2 computers I have had I built from the board up, so I am not totally ignorant of electronics but have never "messed with" any television sets, so I do need advice. I could do whatever is required as long as I had the repair manual with schematics but I don't even know where to start troubleshooting. Thank you for your time, I appreciate your input.

In response to Tim Nolan - it is a resistor glowing - I have a picture of the board but don't know how to post it here - I can tell you which one it is if I can post the picture.
    Thanks - Sherrie

From reading a lot of the other posts, I am guessing that it is indeed a convergence problem. Do I need to replace the ICs? If so, what are the pros/cons of replacing the 110s with 115 or better ? I do have the service manual and while my soldering experience is more along the plumbing line, I do have a friend who is into electronics & might be persuaded to help me out here. Thanks

You Guys Rock !! Thank you so much - I am now ready to tackle this job and am confident that I can be successful at it. The link to cmpalmer's blog was extremely helpful. Thanks for saving me a ton of money and for opening up a whole new area of DIY for me - hey, if a 65 year old grandma can fix her HDTV - Life is Good! I am a firm believer in the old adage "if you can read and follow directions, you can do anything". Thanks again for making that statement a reality. Sherrie

I have a 4 year old Panasonic PT47-WS49SE. When I turn on the tv, the
red LED comes on, then turns off about 2 seconds later. It won't turn
on again after that unless I unplug the tv and replug it back in. Then
    the same thing happens again.

Model Number is actually a PT47-WS49SE. Issue is the same unit turns on
for a few seconds but I have to unplug it and replug it for it to do
the same thing every time. So input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Your post "no blinking lights" is significant. It initially tells us that the problem is in the frontend of the power supply which could simply be a fuse, powercord, cold/loose solder and/or any relatively easy to spot and correct problems. So offhand, exploratory diagnosis and checks might be in order. Since you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself), pls post back if you have access to a DVM and a soldering iron. Additionally, pls see this post here at FixYa and look into the possibility of getting a service manual.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

First take the back off, then when you hit the power button can you hear a click from the relay trying to turn the set on? Or does it do absolutly nothing? If you can hear it click and try to come on then stand behind it with the back off and look in while you have someoen try to turn it on. Do you see any resistors glowing? If you see resistors glowing and they are near the two large STK392-110's then you have a convergence problem. If you dont hear a click at all then you may have the relay resistor open. If you can take a digitol picture and post it here then take a picture of the back of the set with the back off and I will circle some things for you to check and post it back. Let me know what you find out.

    Sherriem,

Dont make this more complicated than it is, you dont need to go buying manuals or looking at websites on how to fix it, your just going to get confused. If the resistor that is glowing is right in front of the STK's then all you need to do is replace the STK's. This is an EASY fix if you or someone you know, knows how to solder. As for the 110 vs 115 questions, it really doesnt matter. My company uses 110's all the time and we never have them go back out on us. So let me know if you need more help or instructions!

    Thanks

My hitachi will not power on when clicking the power button it comes on for a second or less and immediately clicks off

I have worked on a lot of these sets and in fact own one almost identical to yours. The shut off means either a "shut down" circuit is being engaged because of a problem somewhere in the set OR you may have the same problem mine had---here is what I did.

I plugged the set into a outlet controlled by a wall switch: turn set on and it shuts off, turn wall switch off for a second and back on and try turn set on.

In my case sometimes had to do this many times but eventually the set would come on. In my case problem turned out to be bad capacitor near the main power relay, that is the click you hear when try turn set on----if it will not come on after say 20 tries it is bad part most likely in power supply or even bad solder connections that develop after age in many set.

Let me know what you find and IF ANY QUESTIONS feel free to comment here and the site will email me so I can assist you.

You have a bad small signal module! Location should be in the rear left side. The board will require extensive work to pull out and reworked or replaced! This board will have three large heatsinks with convergence ICs and an audio ICs attached to them.Good Luck and thanks for asking!

Most likely cause of that is a red CRT has shorted which will shut the set down.

Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
First of all lower the blue and any other screen controls or service menu settings back to where they were or lower.
Then see if it powers on again with a picture.
If it still shuts off, unplug the Blue CRT circuit board and see if it works.
If it does work the blue CRT may be shorted .
Your problem may have been corroded CRT pins.

Sony KP-511HW40 fleshing with green color and shuts off

this is a common fault adjust the little black box in front behind the small wooden cover. you will see 6 controls don't adjust any of the top 3 only the bottom knobs 1 for each color. slowly back the control counterclockwise turn the set on and wait untill it shows a picture, slowly adjust the control for the color in question utill the color balance is correct- black and white with the color setting turned down all the way with the user menu when balance is ok you are all set.. turn the color back up with user control. rtepeat process if needed.

TV goes off intermittently

sounds like an intermittent shut down which is heat related. some part , maybe one stuck on a heatsink is warming up and running too much current triggering shutdown.
to find it you can tell what is shutting down with a voltmeter, or you can heat suspected parts with a blow dryer to speed the shutdown .. or freeze spray to see if it goes beyond your shutdown time.

Power but no picture or sound

Is hard to tell if the set is going to need parts or not, maybe not, since you protected the set from dust is not likely the cause of the problem, after a while the units develop loose conections because of the heat dissipation some components have and the solder conections become loose.Be safe and seek assistance if you are not too familiar with tv service.
