The general amateur fix, and one with surprisingly high success rates is to brush dust accumulated on the laser lens.
This is assuming you get this with all disks, otherwise better not risk opening it.
Plug it out, open the screws, open it up, if necessary remove another board covering the lens, and gently brush the dust off. Assemble back and hopefully you're solved.
Anything else is for the lab(motor, lens assembly, focusing problems etc)

- Fixed one 3 days ago, just that. Both DVD players in my house have been through the same thing, one of them twice.May 31, 2006
- Sorry, I missed the fact that it's a portable. More chances that it's the other stuff then(motor, lens assembly, focusing problems etc)
