Dishwasher not draining

The dishwasher is not draining... I have emptied the bottom of water and checked to see if the drain was plugged. I have also pressed the cancel/drain button only to have water still standing in the bottom of the washer. What else can be done to look for my problem?
The Dishwasher is a Kenmore Ultra Wash and it came with the house... I don't know how old it is and there is no guide for it.

The drain system is pretty easy to understand and the checks you can do will identify how to fix it..
First off, check the screen filter in the bottom of the dishwasher.. all water must exit thru that filter before it can be pumped out..if that is clean..check the drain hose itself is not kinked or pinched off.. ( depending on your set up..you will find it attached to a drain trap or directly to a stub off the side of your garbage disposer..if you have one..).. make sure that the path the drain water travels is free and not restrictive.. ( meaning: that your drain hose goes into your house drain system and that it is not restricting the water flow thru it).. Lastly.. and as a check.. your pump, the hoses leading to and from it may be bound up ... as a check...you can detach the drain hose and route it into a large bucket or pail under the sink then try cycling the dishwasher.. when it gets to the cycle where it drains.. you should get a very good flow into that bucket.. be careful with this test because if it is working right.. the flow should be fairly high..If it is , then stop the dishwasher and reattatch it to the drain system and monitor its performance there.. If it doesn't pump the water very well..then you may have a restrictive drain system in your house.. Hope this helps..

Dishwasher won't drain

Good Morning Jean,

I see that you are having trouble with your Frigidaire dishwasher, model# FFBD2411NS, draining. There are a few things I would suggest:

1) If the appliance is hooked up to a food waste disposer, make
sure the disposer is empty.
2) Check to see if the knockout plug has been removed
from inside the food waste disposer inlet.
3) Check to see if drain hose is kinked.
4) Check the glass trap filter to see if anything is preventing the water from draining.
5) Overfill Protector should move up and down freely about one inch. If it does not move, lift and clean underneath. Clean occasionally with
household cleaner containing vinegar or bleach to dissolve any buildup.

If none of these suggestions help your dishwasher to drain the water, I suggest contacting your local authorized technician.

-Best Regards-
WP

Water sits in bottom

If water does not drain at all then the drain pump could be blocked.
If only a little water is remaining but cycle is complete, then this is normal.
However, do check the kitchen drain is clear and you do not have a garbage disposer (insinkerator) in sink which is full. Normally empty it before you start the dishwasher.
Do you get any alarms (lights flashing etc)

see this causes and proceed according. God bless you
Belt, Water Pump Although few dishwashers have a water pump belt, if the dishwasher won't drain there might be a worn or broken water pump belt. After removing the lower kick panel the motor can be seen in the front, the water pump belt is on the bottom of the motor.

Drain Pump If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain pump might be defective. Test the pump motor with an Ohm meter. Drain pumps are not repairable, if it's defective it will need to be replaced.

Drain Impeller The drain impeller is attached to the pump and pushes the water out of the dishwasher, through the drain tube and into the garbage disposer or drain line. If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain impeller might be broken or worn out. Replace both the impeller and seal at the same time.

Drain Solenoid Kit If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain solenoid kit might need to be replaced. The drain solenoid is an actuator that opens a flap to allow the water to drain.
Drain Valve The drain valve can get clogged with debris and should be cleaned out if the dishwasher won't drain. If it seems clear of debris but won't actuate, it will need to be replaced. The drain valve is not repairable Pump and Motor Assembly If the dishwasher won't drain, the pump and motor assembly might be defective. If the motor runs during the drain cycle, check for a blockage in the drain line. If the motor won't run during the drain cycle or if it just hums when it should be running, the pump and motor assembly might need to be replaced.

Clogged or Improperly Installed Garbage Disposer If the dishwasher won't drain and the garbage disposer was installed recently, the installer might have forgotten to knock out the drain plug from this disposer. All garbage disposers are sold with a solid plug in the drain tube for situations where a dishwasher isn't connected. However, if the dishwasher is connected, the plug will need to be removed. If the disposer wasn't replaced recently, remove the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer and clean out both the fitting on the disposer and the end of the drain hose. These are the most common places to find an obstruction if the dishwasher won't drain.

Check Valve If the dishwasher won't drain the check valve might be stuck closed. The check valve is a small plastic device which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the valve gets stuck closed, it will prevent the water from draining. The check valve is the device that the drain hose is attached to on the dishwasher.

Check Ball If the dishwasher won't drain the check ball might be stuck. The check ball is a small plastic ball in the check valve which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the ball gets stuck, it will prevent the water from draining also. The check valve is the device that the drain hose is attached to on the dishwasher.

Check the drain line underneath the sink.
It should be suspended just below the counter top.
If it is too low, water from the sink will back fill into the dishwasher.
If the drain is OK,then the dishwasher water valve is defective.

Dishwasher turned on accidently and full of water

Close the dishwasher door and run the drain cycle of the dishwasher only....that should empty the appliance. Note that a little bit of water remaining is normal, but if there is a substantial amount of water left, you will need to check the pump inlet screen and the drain hose or sink for any additional clogging.

Dishwsher wont drain. never happened before. do not use dishwasher very often.

I would first check where the drain hose from the dishwasher connects to the drain stub under the sink. Remove the hose from under the sink and place it into a bucket. Close the dishwasher door and cancel the cycle to put the dishwasher in a drain cycle. Listen for the drain pump to activate. If water comes out of the hose check the stub where the hose connects under the sink with a screw driver to make sure the spout is clear of debris. If no water comes out of the hose, empty the dishwasher by hand using a plastic cup and when empty remove the hose at the pump under the dishwasher and check to see if there is any debris at this point. Make sure hose is clear from the dishwasher pump to the drain stub under the sink. You will need to place a towel or two on the floor as water left in the bottom of the dishwasher will come out when you remove the hoses. If still no water comes out you may have to disassemble the bump assembly. Not knowing what make and model you have I can't help you past this point.
I hope this is of some help.

Water won't drain

Hi fixitfran,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your problem is: You have pulled the dishwasher out and checked hose. No kink in line. You have taken cleaned out dishwasher and no clog. You poored water into dishwasher and it drains from the bottom not throught drain hose. You have checked the drain hose on the bottom of the dishwasher and to no avail....you don't know what is causing this issue....can I help you out with this? LG-14AW3 Dishwasher does not drain properly and then powers itself off mid cycle. Filters are clean and there are no kinks in the drain hose. How do you fix this and will it be very expensive.

Have you recently replaced the garbage disposal? Sometimes the installer forgets to remove the knockout plug. All of the disposal manufacturers plug the d/w connection in case it is installed where there is no d/w. If there is a d/w, the plug must be removed.
