Well the problem is that the PS3 only allows output on one channel. So, this is only going to be optical out, or hdmi, or even AV. You only get one option for the output.

Now, if your TV has the capability.. Run the sound through the HDMI to the TV and then let the TV output the digital sound to the surround system. This will give you the option of turning off the surround and re-enabling the TV's stereo speakers.

I hope this gives you an idea of what the problem is. If I were you, I'd just do as I said. This is exactly how I have mine setup. I have a 600w sub on the surround, so late night movies can't be played on it without the neighbors being woke up. So, I simply disable the TV's output and use it's speakers. :)

Well HDMI gives the best video quality, 1080p and does it better than anything else. Even while bringing in sound. The sound out, that's more or less up to you. AV will actually stand 5.1 with decent clarity. Optical audio can do 7.1 also. I'd try your options and see what sounds the best for you.

And yeah, the neighbor hates when we turn on Rockband. LOL We have alot of fun with the PS3. :)

And your very welcome. Glad I could be of some assistance. :) I hope you like the PS3 and surround. Nothing beats it, specially with blu-ray movies! It's almost insane. I'd rather watch a blu-ray movie then go to the theatres. My 37" and surround produces so much of a better experience. :)

I have a 55" LG

Easy solution; this is a very common problem. Connect Cable or satellite box / DVR directly to one of the TV HDMI inputs. Connect an optical audio cable from that box to receiver so sound is surround through your speakers. You cannot connect DVR directly to receiver because the anti pirating chip will shut off the picture and produce a green or no screen at all.
You can, however, connect a BD (Blu-Ray) player via HDMI cable directly to your receiver without that problem. Connect HDMI output from receiver to a second HDMI input on the LG.

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

I own a Yamaha RX-v365 and i cant figure out how to connect my PS3 to the surround sound. For some reason the HDMI cables wont work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

As above :
Connect PS3 via HDMI to DTV/IN, Connect HDMI from out to TV's HDMI/IN. Connect TV's Optical out to amps DTV/Optical in.

2X HDMI cables and one Optical are required.

I have the V363 but yours looks the same.

Enjoy great sound :)

OH: choose the DTV input then stereo and then dolby etc .. cheers

I have my ps3 connected to my t.v via HDMI, but want to get surround sound on my ps3, how can i do this as my receiver doesnt have optical or hdmi outputs?

Does your TV have any audio outputs at all? It is a new feature of a lot of TV's to have at least an Optical output. Use that to run back into your receiver if available.

Please help with getting 5.1 sound from my TV!

You must run a Digital Optical cable from your PS3 to your reciever. Then press your function button on your recievers remote until you see SAT/CABLE on your recievers display. Next go to your PS3 settings and go to Sound settings, then Audio Output settings, and select Digital out (OPTICAL) then your done. This is the only way to get true digital sound from your PS3 to your reciever.
