Since you are using an obsolete model and computer specs, i don't think this can actually support windows XP in optimal settings.. You might want to install windows 98 on this machine to be able to use it properly.

note: you may think that this machine is working really slow because you tend to compare it on the newer machines that you are using. If that's the case, then you are definitely right that it's slower. This is because the machine is really old. KUDOS to you though for having a working machine that is this old. I used to have one about 4 years ago and it was one of the best during its time. :)

If new processor supports your old motherboard then you will upgrade system with your old motherboard.

If its not supported to new mother board then you have to buy new motherboard to upgrade your system.

Thanks.

Not so much a problem but I have an old Dell dimension with an 866 inteleron processor. I have 2 slots for Ram, each with 256 mb totalling 512, my question is can I replace them with 2 512's for 1plus gb...

Yes you can install 2 512 mb RAM for 1Gb in motherboard. But make sure both 512 RAM are same in configuration and frequency it is better you purchase both ram of same company. Then it works.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

How to get AMD athlon 3700 socket 754 engineering sample cpu run at proper speed

Some systems have "bottlenecks," where small overclocking of a component can help realize the full potential of another component to a greater percentage than the limiting hardware is overclocked. For instance, many motherboards with AMD Athlon 64 processors limit the speed of four units of RAM to 333 MHz. However, the memory speed is computed by dividing the processor speed (which is a base number times a CPU multiplier, for instance 1.8 GHz is most likely 9x200 MHz) by a fixed integer such that, at stock speeds, the RAM would run at a clock rate near 333 MHz. Manipulating elements of how the processor speed is set (usually lowering the multiplier), one can often overclock the processor a small amount, around 100-200 MHz (less than 10%), and gain a RAM clock rate of 400 MHz (20% increase), releasing the full potential of the RAM.

AMD also produced x86 designs which competed with Intel on performance rather than price. In January 2002 the Pentium 4 gained a lead in sales and AMD marketing responded by giving their processors numeric suffixes approximating the clock rate that an AMD Thunderbird (and by inference a Pentium processor) would need to give matching performance, openly undermining the "megahertz myth".

I want upgrade

hello, i would install the cpu you wish to use, then see how it runs. and then do a bios update. this may work,if not the motherboard may not be compatible with the cpu upgrade, (propriatory equipment sometimes does not allow such upgrades) like hit or miss! i hope this info helps, and you get the dell to accept the faster cpu. good luck! glen

UpGrade

you could only upgrade the processor and RAM in this condition i.e.

you can only change your an upgraded p-III processor like 1.0 GHz, 1.1 GHz or 1.3GHz and
upgrade the RAM by changing to 256 in each slot.

that is all what u can do with ur pc

Important: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition cannot be successfully installed on x86 (32-bit) systems or 64-bit Intel Itanium–based systems. 32-bit device drivers are not supported on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
• Computer with a supported processor: AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon with Intel EM64T support, Intel Pentium 4 with Intel EM64T support
• 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended
• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard-disk space (additional space may be required if installing over a network)
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
• Keyboard, Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device

arrow_px_up.gifTop of page Additional items or services required to use certain Windows XP features • 28.8-Kbps modem or fax modem and service provider required for Internet access (service provider may charge a fee)
• Sound requires a sound card and speakers (USB speakers require a computer with USB support) or headphones
• Remote Assistance requires that both parties be running Windows XP and be connected over a network
• Remote Desktop requires a computer running Windows 95 or later and the two computers must be connected over a network
• DVD video playback requires a DVD drive and DVD decoder card or DVD decoder software and 8 MB of video RAM
• Windows Movie Maker video capture feature requires an appropriate digital or analog video capture device and 400-MHz or faster processor for digital video camera capture
