Most likely it's a corroded door catch or a bad solenoid. Hopefully it's not the main control board. You'll need a repair manual or technician. A work around would be to use detergent tablets in the compartment
This may sound ridiculous, and I'm no "expert", but are you starting out with really hot water (i.e. running the faucet at the kitchen sink until hot water comes out)? My wife refuses to do this and she encounters the same problems: dirty dishes and leftover soap. *I* make sure that hot water is readily available to the dishwasher (even though it's *supposed* to heat it for you) and never have either issue.

It has some very heavy petroleum-based ingredients, so I think the best solution would be to try Murphy's Oil Soap (available in most grocery stores in the household cleaning aisle). The vegetable oil in the Murphy's Oil Soap should break up the pomade enough to follow up with regular shampoo.

The company says it's out of production until the Fall of 2011. It's being moved to a different manufacturing plant. The **** who made the decision didn't have enough brains to stock pile before the move. ****.
