Question about Canon PIXMA iP1800 InkJet Photo Printer
I only have the black ink cartridge filled however my colored cartridge is out but my printer won't print. I went to printer setting and clicked to print black only but the message still appears that the colored cartridge is empty and need to be filled. I want to know if I can print using the black cartridge without the colored being filled or will I have to go and buy a colored ink cartridge. Your advice is well needed. I also would like to know how can I set my printer to use less ink because I am always running out of ink. A new ink cartridge only last me for about a week.
Apparently, if you hold the "resume button" (the one next to the power button) for about five seconds after you get the message saying to replace the color ink cartridge the machine starts printing. I did this after I went to "maintenance" under "preferences" and changed ink to "black only." At first that alone did not work, but after trying the resume button for 5 secs it worked okay.

This is Canon's way of getting you up and into a store to buy one of their cartridges.
Typically you can just set printing to grayscale through printer options, but if that doesn't work then they might have disabled printing unless you have BOTH cartridges installed. I used to have an old Epson printer that would do the exact same thing. If I was out of one cartridges, it would keep reminding me that I was out and would not print until I got a new one.
As for your consumption, how many pages are you printing a week? And are you using the original Canon print cartridges 30 for black and 31 for color? I have an iP1800 myself and I don't burn through my cartridges that quickly...
