No Vertical Sweep

I have a Hitachi 27FX28B.. when I turn the television on the picture is fine, within 3-5 minutes though - the picture compresses to a thin vertical line across the middle of the screen (audio is fine). The television is 8 years old.. what is the problem and is it worth fixing?

Reduced vertical sweep

Height of the picture is less than normal? If so, check and replace all the electrolytic capacitors at its vertical sweep output section circuit. Replace all of it at one time. There will be 5 or 6 of them.

Vertical hold problem

This is not a vertical sweep output problem. Check and replace all the supply filter capacitors at the secondary side power supply section to SMPS.

I have a hitachi tv model 35ux70b and the picture is compressed on the horizontal scale (there is sound but the picture is only a small vertical line across the screen). the problem used to correct itself...

As far as there is sound and a vertical line on the screen, the circuit board of your TV is working fine I should say. The fault is in the Horzontal Sweep Out section. That is, it may be due to the Deflection Coil, or any capacitor. Deflection coil is one which is fixed at the neck of the picture tube, and its failure rate is very rare. One out of Thousand may occur. So let us concentrate to the second.
Horizontal sweep signal is send to the yoke wia a capacitor [sometimes may two numbers in parellel]. This capacitor can be located on the main board very near to Line Output Transformer [LOT]. It is a polyster capacitor. Its capacitance value may be vary from 0.22 to 0.89 Mfd. If it gets opened, that is its internal continuity breaks, or if its soldering points get loose contated, this fault may occur.
You just open the back cover of your TV. Since it is a 35" one, up to 34,000VDC points will be there inside it while it is working. So take every precautions not to harm yourself. Check the capacitor I mentioned earlier. It can be recoganized by its size itself. Will look like a medium type chocolate toffee. Just press, give a small hit at its top it with any noncondutive material like wood or so, and check whether screen comes for momentarly atleast. if it comes, you can make sure that the its soldering has some loose, and resoldering it will solve the problem. If not, resolder it out from the board, and go for a same type. It is a critical component, eventhough it is so small, you shoud buy one with the exact capacitance value and voltage ratings marked on it. Ok.

No picture

You have an intermittant vertical sweep circuit! It could be the vertical out put IC solder connections on the printed circuit board, or maybe the IC itself has poor connections between the IC and the contact legs that mount the IC, or another componet in the vertical sweep circuit. If you know how to solder and unsolder, work on printed circuit boards, then you shoul have no problem replacing the vertical sweep circuit. Good Luck
