Question about Husqvarna Viking 1

Viking sewing machine

Model 6400
As usual I should have researched before tearing into the machine - the fix would have been much easier. Here is the problem there is a small spring that is attached to a small white wheel (in the area that runs the needle) I can't find what it was attached to. Second problem a small piece of tubing fell out and I can't figure out where it goes. It looks a little like a 22 case and is just under a half inch long, one end is a complete circle and smooth while the other end is half smooth on the end and appears to have had a small section broke off as it is ruff in that area.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

    Thank you!

From what you wrote I am guessing the the crank slide is broken.

The spring with the white wheel is in the area of the belt, it makes sense that it would be used for creating tension. That is the probably the only part I could fix as it sounds like the crank slide would be a real pain to repair. Any ideas on what I would be looking at to have it fixed?

    Thank you again,

Wow, that is good detail on the tube that fell out. If it is a brass colored tube that is open on both ends then you need a new crank slide. You may also notice that the take up lever can be moved up and down about a quarter to half of an inch. That sleeve can't be put back so that it will stay, and installing a new crank slide is probably something that you will want someone to show you how to do, not read from a manual.
Is the small white wheel near the drive belt? If so, it is to hold tension on the belt. Let me know and I will look in one and can tell you where to hook it.

I normally recommend a full service be performed along with the repair. At my store, I charge about $200 for this repair. That covers parts, labor and tax and comes with a 1 year warranty. If you have other problems, such as the stitch selector being hard to turn or the fixed cam being cracked, it will cost more. If you have a cam installed in the machine, remove it as normal. The fixed cam is what your removable cams slide onto. At the end of the cylinder, there is a black cam set that normally stays in the machine. If the outer edge of the black cam is cracked, it will need to be replaced also. That will cost an additional $90 or so.
These types of repairs can add up very quickly. But if you don't do both of those at the same time, the machine will probably be back within a few months for the cam.
Whatever you do, don't tell a repair technician that you love the machine and absolutely must get it repaired. That could cost another $100-$150.

Husqvarna viking model 980

You may have the tension set too tight or are not using the correct needle. Or, the bobbin thread may not be the same as the top thread. Also, here is a little trick. Put a piece of typing paper under the edge of the material and sew across the paper onto the material on all edges that you sew off of, to give a little stability to the material. This usually works and you can tear it off gently when you are finished sewing. Also, if the tensions are o.k., try using a ballpoint needle.

The needle in my Viking 6440 is locked in on the left side and the machine will only sew in reverse. The reverse button cannot be moved in or out.

I'm trying to find a machine similar to yours and have done much research re: the older mech viking sewing machines 6000 series. They are GREAT machines, suffering only from problems such as yours caused by the old "lube/grease" they used when it was made @ factory. In their efforts of making a "never needs oil" mech sewing machine, the grease tends to harden & freeze up the gears & cams inside the machine. You need to have it serviced @ authorized Viking shop as you have to completely disassemble the machines & gears, clean, re-lube, & re calibrate the gears... I understand this s/b ~ $175. Money well spent considering if taken care of your beauty could be sewing for another 60 yrs!
Hope this helps!

Viking sewing machine model 6430 will only sew backwards

Th cam stack gears have gummed up on you you can try getting the back cover off along with the side and soaking the machine down with wd-40 and running it while forcing the reverse button in and out if it breaks free try and soak up as much of the wd-40 as you can and then oil anything that moves. I know this may be discouraging but viking no longer supports this machine and you might be better off taking it to an older viking dealer for help.
