Question about GE Refrigerators

2 Answers

I purchased a GE refrigerator in 2002, I have always had problems with the ice maker, and technicians came and overlooked problem now initial problem escalated into lots more, affecting the damper system in fridge area. This device does not open and shut automatically. The technician said that I should not keep my fridge and freezer at 5 and 5 that 2 and 3 is sufficient. I checked my manual and it indicates medium settings at 5 and 5. I was under impression that fridge should maintain full function no matter what the temp control are set at. Isn t this a personal and individual choice, I mean if i want my fridge cooler and the fridge is equipped with this control giving us choice up to 9, obviously I did not max it out, it is at 5, shouldn t i expect it to work properly whether at 5 or 4 or 6

I have always had problems with the ice. This fridge comes with two options crushed ice and ice cube. I have never been able to dispense cubes, the cellenoid always freezes. Would you believe that the Sears Technician actually told me that it is a current GE problem with this model and the only way I can maintain ice cube dispensing functionable is by using my hairdryer and defrosting the cellenoid clap that freezes all the time. I have never bothered going through such nonsence for ice cubes. They have changed the cellenoid twice already, it still freezes. This has been an ongoing problem since we first got it in 2002. Because they never fixed the initial problem with the icemaker, the automatic stopping control for the ice bucket that should automatically shut off when ice bucket is full freezes also, hence, we must remind ourselves to manually shut it off. THIS IS NOT NORMAL WHEN WE PAID 3000 for full functionable feature, in my opinion. Since this control does not work properly it jam packed the bucket full of ice, cracking the interior facing of bucket.

Water dispenser works properly, its the ice dispenser that never wants to give cubes.

The damper dont work properly either, it fails to either automatically shut or open, hence, my eggs freeze , my milk freezes. The technician lowered the freezer temp at 4 on one visit, and my milk spoiled. Because the damper sweats, there is a lot of dampness and water dripping from damper. I have to constantly throw away lettuce and other spoiled veggies that are sensitive to such high humidity. I believe, and correct me if I m wrong that the technician tried to camouflage the problem by insisting that my temp. control being set at 5 and 5 is way too cold, and that is the result of the freezing parts, such as cellenoid controling my ice dispenser, and the damper freezing unshut or shut. If such nonsence is true, then why does my manual that originally came with the fridge demonstrates the normal settings at 5 and 5, and why would GE provide a choice of temp control center 0 to 9?? These are personal choice options, and every household has their preference on how cool they want their fridge and freezer to be. The settings have been at 5 and 5 since day one.

oh i forgot to mention, the ice maker has completely stopped producing ice.

the damper has been replaced this friday. The water line is in perfect condition because there is water in the ice thing that should freeze the cubes, that was checked this friday. The fan makes this harley davidson noise , this fridge should be silent, and boy is it loud. the noice comes from freezer area.

I have an extended warranty running through sears, I don t trust this fridge so I make sure the warranty is renewed yearly. I don t pay anything for the repairs, but it is frustrating to waste so much food. Should my dishwasher break I can easily wash my dishes by hand, but this is a fridge, I cannot go without a normal functionning fridge. Sears warranty stipulates that if they cant fix it they should replace it, this considering the problem is recurrent.

The reason I wrote on this site, is to clarify that the settings have absolutely nothing to do with the other features freezing up and not working normally. I need this confirmed officially because I have lodged an official complaint with sears and the service manager.

Hi All
finally Sears accepted the fact they cannot repair my problem with this lemon and decided to buy out. My question is when they offer the buy out they will depraciate the fridge. I paid in 2002 2800 tax included. Are they going to take into account that a fridge life span is 12 to 15 yrs. I do not trust Sears anymore, and do not want to get screwed by these people. When they offer buy amount , what is a fair depreciation on this fridge. I verified and equivelent fridge with same features sell for 3000.

HELP ME.... I VE HAD IT WITH SEARS

The settings depend on the fridge's manufacturer. some fridges are designed to work at certain settings to optimize it's functionality and therefore are more finicky.

you are correct to say that no matter the setting, the fridge should operate correctly though.

can you clarify the problem with the icemaker? is it dispensing ice and/or water? is it freezing?

the icemaker has nothing to do with the fridges function. in other words, does not affect the damper, sealed system or controls.

in that case, i would have them come out again, at no charge of course, and replace the icemaker and the damper. if you have an option to upgrade to a better icemaker unit that would be even better. also have them check the water line coming into the icemaker itself for any breaks or imperfections.

as far as the damper, whirlpool has discovered that the motor inside the damper is noisy and have revised the dampers. have the technician replace that one as well.

sounds like you have them check everything i would check. this fridge is a lemon and needs to be replaced. the problem most likely lies in the design. have them exchange it.

MY GE MONOGRAM ZIS420D FREZZER IS NOT MAING ANY ICE. WHAT SHOULD I DO

check for continuity on the ice maker water fill solenoid valve in the lower rear area of the refrigerator, then remove cover from front of ice maker, and there are 2 gears inside this cover, follow the instructions on the ice maker by this gear and turn it the way it tells you to,this will initiate a manual ice production, you will see the gears turn by themselves after you help turn these gears initially, then you should see water enter from fill tube in the back of the ice maker if the fill tube isnt froze over,if no ice production occurs the ice maker thermostat could be open(bad) or if it makes ice but doesn't push it out the heater below the maker may be open(bad)

Ice maker is not working

Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

Very Loud Ice Maker in GE gfss6kkxs Fridge

Sorry to inform you but GE refrigerators are known for their noise making machines. I myself have a GE Profile side by side but will never own another GE product. After repairing appliances GE is better priced than their competition and the reason cheaper made product. Sometimes cheaper doesn't mean better. Outside looks really good but what you don't see is ugly. BB

Ice maker in our GE profile refrigerator is not working

Ice maker Diagnostic Test:

- Remove the ice bucket
-Turn the ice maker off, wait 15 seconds than turn it back on
-Press the ice paddle three times, this will begin diagnostic test.
-PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ICE MAKER DURING DIAGNOSTICS

-In 3 minutes you should see the rack inside turn 360 degrees
-AND the ice maker bowl should fill with water

-IF either DID NOT work, call 1-800-GE-CARES for ice maker replacement. A service call is approx $80. The $80 will be deducted from the part/labor if you choose to purchase/install parts from the service technician. If not, you will pay for the service call. Good luck.

We had a similar problem when we first purchased ours. It turned out that where the water line had been punched through into the house line, the punch ended up having to be backed out a little and then punched through again. The initial installation had not pushed through enough. No problems since. Hope this helps.
