Hooking up external DVD player

By docpat on May 27, 2006

My set will now only play select DVD's (it seems to like the older titles), while new release DVD's will not play. I have explored the obvious solutions (disc and DVD player cleaners, making sure parental control is off, etc), and have decided to hook up an external DVD player. There are no instructions with the TV manual about hooking up external DVD players, but when I attach the 3-lead cable from the external DVD to the video/audio input on the back of the TV, nothing happens. Is there a need or a way to override the unit's own DVD player? Any suggestions?
There is a dish network box hooked to this TV also, and I have tried routing the external DVD straight to the TV as well as through the Dish box. No luck so far. Thanks for any suggestions....

-   I've placed all the connections in properly however, only my television setup and menu show up. The external DVD player used to work before, but my 5 year old got a hold of the remote control and now the TV and the external DVD are not recognizing each other.-   raindoll

if you tryed to hook up into another video input you also have to switch the inputs on the remote in the input menu from input 1 or 2 to the same.

If you only have the one Audio/Video or AV input then pop into a TV store and buy a cheap AV switch. Plug your Dish Box into one set of inputs and your DVD into the other. Then run another lead from the switch box to the TVs AV inputs.

That way all you do is match the switch to whatever it is you want to watch.

If your TV does have two AV inputs just run each unit to a set of inputs and change the TV to AV1 or AV2 depending on which you want to watch and which unit is connected to which AV input.

I hope you understood that :-)

You need to use the "input select" button on your remote to select either Line 1 or Line 2, which ever input Line your DVD player is plugged into. Many of newer DVDs are called "blue ray" DVDs, maybe those are th eones your TV doesn't recognize.
