Question about Computers & Internet

Secured network properties

I used to be prompted by my Acer computer for the passphrase for a network but somehow the settings of the properties must have changed for encryption type and security type and now the computer is trying to connect without asking me for a passphrase (password). How do I reset the properties that may have changed and to what so that the Acer asks me for a passphrase again? I think the security type is wep from observing by Toshiba laptop. I never connected to this network because I cannot get the passphrase for this secured network and I don't wish to. I have windows vista home premium. I have an Acer Extensa 5420-5038 laptop.

Connecting your Acer laptop to your home wireless network is fairly simple.
Before you begin you need to know the SSID broadcast name (Wi-Fi) network name and security passphrase (Wi-Fi network password).

Move the Wi-Fi switch to the "On" position.
Not all models have this switch.

Open the Windows Start menu and select "Connect To."
A list of available connections will appear.

Select "All" from the drop-down menu to view all available networks and connections within range.

Select the desired network and click "Connect."
Enter the security passphrase if prompted and click "Connect" again to join the network and gain wireless Internet access.

Wireless Internet is a convenient way to hook up multiple computers to one router without the mess of cords.

The router or 2-in-one (router/modem combo), must be set up through your Internet Service Provider and connected with either a DSL line or Cable.

Since most Acer laptops have built-in wireless, no additional hardware is required.
Turn on the laptop.

Move the switch located on the front of the laptop to the right, then let go.
The switch will go back to its original position.

Confirm that the wireless networking icon has appeared on the screen.

Right-click the wireless icon in the bottom right corner.

In Windows 7 this will resemble a small stair-step triangle; In Vista it looks like a tiny monitor.

Click "View available wireless networks."
It might also say "Open network and sharing center."

Wait while the adapter finds your wireless network.
Click to highlight the network and click the "Connect" button.

Enter the security password that you created when setting up the router (if applicable).
If you don't know or can't remember, log in to the gateway page specified in the user's guide.

Locate the "Wireless security" settings page to see if security is enabled.
If it is, type in a new key and enter the same number for the wireless network.

How do I set up a wireless network on my ACER Aspire One?

To connect your computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh network list, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connect to your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used to configure the Wireless Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrase that was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router. http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_address For information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in the laptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Where can I find the SSID number to enter into other computers to be able to connect to the internet by using my service. . . My husband has his computer in the basement and we are having a time...

Open up Internet Explorer, type 192.168.1.1 hit enter. Enter your login information (if you never set a password or anything then your Username should be admin and your Password should be password). Scroll down to Advanced, select Wireless Settings and you should see your Name (SSID) that will be the name of your network! Now if you have security for your wireless network such as WEP or WPA, you will also need to know the Sharedkey or passphrase so that everyone can get into your network, or you can just shut off security, i don't advise that though. Anyway, if you have WEP security, you click generate and it will generate 4 keys and then you pick which one you want to use, once you pick, right down the key and type that when you're prompted to. You will be prompted when you try to connect to your network using a computer. With WPA, you create the passphrase.

How to set a security cod for wifi

This is a Quick and easy fix!
  1. Use an Ethernet cable to connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
  2. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
  3. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin; password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.

Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar.
  4. Under Wireless Network, enter your desired network name in the Name (SSID) box.
  5. Under Security Options, select WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
  6. Under Security Options (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK), enter your desired network password into the Passphrase box.
    • WRITE DOWN or KEEP NOTE of your network name, security option and passphrase - you will require them to connect wireless computers and devices to your network.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings.

Password settings

Greetings!

I am presuming that the address you are using, 192.168.1.1 is the address from the user manual. This may not be the address that is actually assigned to your router however.

The Linksys Router can be configured in one of two ways, either with a static IP Address or by DHCP, a service that automatically assigns an IP from a DHCP Server on your network.

An easy way to test this is to go to a PC on your network that you know is functional and uses the Linksys Router as its network access point and open a command prompt from the start menu (start/accessories/command prompt).

At the command prompt type in tracert www.fixya.com and hit enter. The first address that you see in the traceroute is the IP address of the Linksys Router.

Write this down IP down and then plug it into your web browser. A login prompt window will appear on the screen. Do NOT enter a login name in this prompt - the default for admin is nothing. Simply input the admin password and the web browser will open to the admin page on the router.

As you are configuring a new network security password and protocol be aware of a few things:

1. WEP and WPA are two types of security used on these routers. Of the two, WPA is the more secure, however there may be devices and or clients on your network that do not support WPA. Prior to selecting WPA verify that there are no devices that cannot use that standard.

2. If you are adding a new security profils (password) and retaining the existing login passwords (keys) then your network will continue to function as it has, however if you delete the existing keys (passwords) then you will need to go to each computer/device on the network and update each with the new login information.

Once you have decided upon the security protocol you intend to use (WEP or WPA) you must then do the following:

1. On the router admin page click WIRELESS and then WIRELESS SECURITY.

2. For WEP you will set the Encryption Size and then enter a passphrase. The router will generate a key in hex and you will need to write down this key and provide it to the users on your network. If you change the passphrase later the key will also change and you will need to repeat the above.

3. For WPA, you set the encryption type and then enter a passphrase. Provide this passphrase to the users as that is how they will authenticate using WPA.
