You would connect a laptop from Canada the same way as one from the US. You want to make sure the wireless card is turned on and check for wireless networks. Once you have found your network select it make sure you type the password correctly.
which ever computer you have the modem/router first connected to the internet this should apply to
then you can connect another computer/s through the router
The netgear router installation will set up the internet connection during install. Download the Router driver from netgears website and install on the computer/s then your up and running. it appears you wireless card is seeing the router so just install the drivers and your set.
Make sure your desktop doesn't have static IP address. Go to Network Connections, Properties of Local Area Connection, Internet Protocol > Properties. Select Obtain IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Servers Automatically. Apply the changes and restart the computer.
It sounds as though you will need to get router to allow the sharing of the Internet between the two computers. Using a router makes it much easier to share an Internet connection between multiple computers. You would connect the Embarq box to the router on the WAN port, and then connect your computers to the LAN ports of the router. You may also want to get a wireless router in the event your laptop has a Wi-Fi connection.
First enable the Wireless service of your Internet Service Router/modem what ever it is.
Then enable the Wireless plug and play service in your Laptop, it will automatically load the required file, if not then use the Windows Installation CD/Mobo CD of the Laptop.

You may be running into a problem of your ISP only allowing one computer on the internet. while the internet is on can you access the internet from the desktop comcast originally setup? If so that is more then likely your problem.
I have comcast myself and they told me they do not allow home networks. I fixed that problem by using the mac address cloning feature in my router.
The setup cd is also junk, all you should really need to do is: 1. unplug modem, router, and turn off computers 2. Plug modem into router 3. Plug computers into router (don't worry about wireless right now) 4. Turn on modem, wait 20 seconds or so for lights to set, 5. Turn on router. again wait for lights to set 6. Turn on ONE computer that is hard wired into the router 7 Try to surf the net. 8. If successfull try to connect wireless computers (Without using cd) and see if they surf.
If not call comcast and see if your computers are trying to obtain real-world ip's instead of LAN ip's like they should. If so, you'll need to enable DHCP on the router.
Hi sheena -Is your desk top hooked up throgh the router? If not, plug your modem into the wan port on the router. The router should have come with a couple of short cables, most likely blue and yellow. Use the blue to connect your modem to your router. You can check the manual just to be sure. Use the ethernet cable that had been connecting your desk top to your modem, and plug into one of the wired ports on the router. I imagine you'll be using wireless for your laptop. Make sure that it is on. Put the cd in your desk top and run from there. Follow the directions. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be glad to assist you further. If this solves your probleb PLEASE rate this as fixed. Remember. Need help? Just holler Sheena.
