When I turn on the TV a black square appears & covers almost all of the screen...What's wrong?

Hi,
Go to the menu of the tv. Serch for CC (Closed capion option) and change its setting to OFF.
Or press the CC button on the remote repeatedly to select CC OFF.
OK

You`ve mentioned that ON CERTAIN CHANNELS THE TV WORKS FINE, so your trying to say that not all channels THE BLACK SQUARE APPEARS IN THE MIDDLE O THE SCREEN... my be that black square is generated from the broadcast center. may be your unit is good. let me ask you how many channels that your tv works fine..?

Black Square area on Screen

If you press display on the remote, it will go away. It will come back, it's a common fault for this set and theres a mod to be done to the eeprom.

Look for the closed captioning (CC) menu in the set up and turn CC off.

Most likely it's the closed captioning has been turned on. From your post I assume you have the remote control and able to access the menus so try to turn off the closed captioning. I'll be notified if you post something new.

He, he. Somebody activated the subtitle mode on the remote. Desactivate the CC mode on your menu and it'll go away or at least if you want CC put it in CC1 Text1

Black square covering up most of the screen

Try goeing into your Menu and see if you have the closed Caption on that will produce a black box on the screen if you have the owners manual look in there,if you don't have it you can go on line and download it from the manufactures website under Downloads Good luck Walter Grzybowski
