The hinge is broken - a common fault with the DS.
Options:
1. Fix it Yourself (see YouTube.com for helpful videos) - need a new case & possibly a new LCD top screen - these are small inside and ensure you are confident before starting. Will cost about £15 to £25 in parts.
2. Send it to Nintendo - repair charge of upto £55 (in the UK).
3. Sell it on eBay (as faulty) and buy a new one (with 12 month warranty, this will cost you about £40-50).
4. Get it mended privately - will cost you £30-£60.

Taking cover off nintendo ds lite

Are you talking about the back cover or front cover?
Either way, before starting you are going to need two things: A tri-wing screwdriver and a Philips screwdriver.

To remove the BOTTOM COVER, you must take off the stickers covering the screws and remove the screws. 001e10e1-317e-4bb5-97cd-230a82f77aaf.jpg
Then, carefully pry the back off, revealing the motherboard inside.

To remove the TOP COVER, you must take off the stickers covering the four screws in the corners of the INSIDE top screen. Unscrew them and gently push the inside top screen down until its about half a centimeter apart from it's backside. Then pull the backside off and you have it open.

If you wanted to open the DS completely, like have it in half, you should first open the BOTTOM COVER and remove the motherboard after disconnecting it from everything attached to it. Then follow the steps given for removing the TOP COVER and slide the ribbon and cables sticking through from the TOP to the BOTTOM back to the TOP so that they are not sticking through and won't be damaged when you take the DS apart. Then unscrew the power light and voila! The DS should be separated.

DS Lite Bottom Screen Diagnosis

Hi,

I have had this issue before and have found it to be the screen at fault in every case of the issue... I agree there are no obvious signs of damage. For some reason they just give up, I wish I could find out the reason why as I have at least 10 screens in this condition just sitting here without a use.

Get yourself a new bottom screen and that should do the trick. It is frustrating having the seemingly perfect screen go to waste but as of yet I don't have the solution.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
SOD69

Turns on and lights up but no images on top screen

The DS top screen has two components, which are the LCD display, and the backlight. If the LCD display has gone bad but the backlight still works and the connecter is seated properly, the DS will still power on and the lower screen will be normal, and the top screen will light, but it won’t display anything.

You didn’t mention if your DS is the original DS or the DS Lite. Replacement top screens for the DS Lite are cheap on eBay, but installing the screen is a bit complex. The screen for the original DS is a different part and they are more expensive and hard to find.

I’ve never worked on an original DS, so I can only tell you about installing the top screen on a DS Lite.

First, the DS Lite has to be just about completely disassembled. You have to completely remove the top and bottom cases, pull out the microphone and wi-fi cables, and release the connecter for the top screen, which is located on the main board in the lower case. You’ll need the tri-wing screwdriver. You can leave the bottom screen/touch screen assembly attached to the main board, but be careful not to pull or tear the flex cables. Check YouTube for videos on disassembling the DS Lite.

Here’s the deal breaker for most people: The speakers are soldered to the flex cable of the top screen. I’ve never seen a replacement sold with speakers. You’ll have to unsolder your speaker wires from the old screen cable and reconnect them to the new one. If you can’t solder, you could take the screens to a local tv/electronics repair shop and pay to have it done. I got this information for you from http://wiinewz.com/forums/nds-general-discussion/72805-ds-top-screen-white-blank.html this appears to be a common problem I hope this helps

RE:nintendo DS lite power light comes on but both screens stay dark?solution

Wotterz.

This is a problem with the cpu on the systemboard. I've seen this problem many times if the DS Lite is felt to the ground. The contacts of the cpu are very fragile. The DS Lite turns on, green led available, even charche is working bot nothing else. Repair of this problem is almost impossible. The only thing you can do is send it to Nintendo.

You can test if it is the cpu by removing the bottom of the DS Lite and put the battery on te contacts.
Press firmly on slot 1 (the aluminium cover) and turn the DS Lite on. If you got a picture on the screens then you know it for sure. The cpu is located under slot 1 and by pressing on de top of the slot you are pressing possible loose contacts back on de systemboard.

If it is not working then the cpu is to musch damaged.

Let us know what you've found with this solution.

Nintendo DS Lite Top Screen -Stopped workign completely

I have a solution! I am a mechanical engineering student at Purdue. My little brother spilled water on his DS lite and the screens had little weird warbly spots on it, but it still worked. He asked me if I could fix it.
I bought replacement screens for it and went to work tearing it apart. Once I got the screens replaced, I put it back together and tried it. It worked perfectly, but then something happened and it stopped altogether. After that, when I would slide the power switch on, the light blinked on and the bottom screen turned on. Then, the unit quickly powered-off and that was the end of it.
After a lot of research I found what the problem was. It was discovered that a lot of DSs were "Bricking," or stopped working, same problems as you guys have. You need to reroute some sections of the motherboard to bypass defunct safety mechanisms. If you would like more information, please email me at charlyoak@msn.com. As each case can vary. I have repaired a large number of DSs and DS lites. Chances are, I can help you too!
