I/O error. HP 1720n won't boot

Computer won't boot. Says to hit Cntrl-Alt-Del, but this doesn't work. Eventually the screen says I have a problem communicating with a device connected to my computer. Nothings connected however. Bad hard drive?? It's from file: \Windows\system32\winload.exe Status: 0xc00000e9 Info: unexpected I/O Error has occured.
Running Vista Home Premium.
Any way to fix this???

Thanks for the ideas. I ran diagnostics on the hard drive and it passed. I don't have a Vista DVD. I bought the HP from ebay a year ago. It didn't come with any disks. Any idea how I can run the repair process?

Run diagnostics on the hard drive (Normally provided either in the F8 or F12 boot menus) and se if you get a failure.

If the drive passes diagnostics, boot to the Vista DVD and run the repair option. (Note: you may have to the Vista repair process 4 or 5 times if there are multiple errors to be resolved)

I have an HP1110n....It acts like it is booting up, but I only see my screen background pic. No icons show up. The disk spins and is doing something, but it won't display ANY icons ! Help !

This happens when Explorer (the file manager - the program that makes all the files visible on the screen) doesn't starts at boot. Press Alt + Ctrl + Del to open Task Manager. Click File, click Run and type explorer. Click OK and the icons and the taskbar will appear. If it doesn't start or it's faulty in any way you will have to reinstall Windows.

My computer boots up but i never get into the login screen and when i press the keys on the keyboard it beeps

when the screen goes blank or gets stuck on the loading screen. simply press cntrl alt delete -----> task manager ----> file -----> new task ------> then type explorer.exe and hit ok. Once you are in, please download the microsoft hotfix for this issue at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948790 hope this helps even a bit.

hello, when it happened on my computer it was the bios that was somehow set to boot from the wrong disk. It happened after I had to reboot after a hang, so it hadn't been shut down properly. Hope this helps!

Computer turns on and works fine once turned off the orange button comes one - then if I cntrl alt delete the system boots? what gives?

If you just hit the button, it's probably set to suspend. You should be using the shutdown procedure, or alt-F4.

Need password

ok best thing to do is to start the computer up in safe mode

when you boot up computer it will say press a key to go to "boot menu"
press that key

then select boot up in safe mode

then log on as admin and delete the password

if that dosnt work then you will need to download and butn this to dvd

http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

make sure yu do not choose the ods version and you choose the gui if there are two versions

the gui has a graphical usser interface the dos is just like comand prompt

then go into bios set to boot from cd then choose the password tools and use it to delete it

good luck

On powering on'the screen remains black and the ethernet plug is flickering. no sound from the hard drive

the hard drive could have failed..Try a hard start to see if it will react. Do you get any beeps?? a warning beep or beeps may indicate a hard drive failure. Try to get into C-Mode set up. click alt/cntrl/del as you turn on the set.or alt/cntrl F10. Hard drive failures can happen if ther is to much written to the drive or just a plain 'Crash'.

Start up problem

hi steve,

can you get into the BIOS?
if so, would u make sure the boot orders are following:
1st. boot from hard drive,
2nd, cd rom
3rd, floppy,
4th, network adaptor?

save changes and try restart.
i hope you do have OS installed.
if not change 2nd part to 1st, and 1st to 2nd.

i have gotten the same error with my laptop. my computer was trying to load window from network, through network adapter.

hope this information helps.

Frozen during boot-up, keyboard still works

Sounds like the PC is running into a hardware failure and the Compaq splash screen is probably hiding some additional information. It?s been a long time since I've owned a Compaq, however, what you need to do first is eliminate the Compaq screen to show us whatever boot details it may be hiding. I seem to recall on my old Compaq (and most Dells) I had to disable the Compaq screen in the BIOS settings. Hitting the F10 key as soon as the Compaq screen appears I believe will get you into the BIOS program, however, be warned if you change anything in there by accident you will be causing yourself a world of trouble. After you get into there you want to look for the Boot selection of the menu. In there somewhere will be a setting referring to something similar to ?reveal boot details? or hide splash or Compaq screen?. If it isn?t obvious let me know, I?ll have access to an older Compaq with a similar BIOS and can give you more details. If you are able to disable the splash screen reboot the PC and watch for errors. Based on the age of the machine and past history I suspect you?ll find a boot disk or read error.
