Hi push to start switch for - how-to-repair-a-dryer-1.jpg Except for the power cord and the exhaust vent, the components that make up the dryer are contained in a sheet metal box. Each component acts independently of the others, but all are interrelated in some way. There are several different ways to disassemble the cabinet for tests and repairs, depending on the manufacturer and model of the machine. Basic disassembly procedures are simple.

Some knobs may be held to their shafts with setscrews. Unscrew the fasteners and pull the knobs straight out. To get at most parts, however, only remove the back panel. Don't disassemble the rest of the cabinet until you're sure you can't make the tests, replacements, or repairs from the back. If the light in the dryer burns out, remove it from the dryer. You may need to remove retaining screws and panels to access it. Replace the burned-out bulb with a new one of the same type and wattage; check the ends of the

Step 2: To remove the lower front panel, pull it away from the bottom of the cabinet. Lift the lower panel up and away. Remove the springs under each side of the lower panel.

Step 3: To remove the top panel, wedge a stiff-bladed putty knife under the rim of the top and pry the top off. The putty knife helps release several spring fasteners at the top of the cabinet sides and front.

Step 4: To remove the dryer's control panel, remove the screws that hold it to the cabinet top or front. These screws may be under a piece of metal or plastic trim; pry off or unscrew the trim. Most knobs are friction-fit; pull them straight out.

Caution: When testing or repairing the electrical parts of a gas dryer, remember that the dryer is hooked to a gas pipe. Turn off the shutoff valve on the supply pipe before disconnecting the gas supply line or moving the dryer and before doing any electrical work.

No display on some of the cycles, whens set on cycle that timer lights up and i push start button, the dryer turns off

Start Switch

A faulty start switch will disable the dryer. To test the switch, access will have to be made within the control panel. Locate the start switch inside the control console. It will have two or three wires connected to it. Remove the wires by pulling at the connectors and taking them off the terminals.

Using a volt-ohm meter, test the terminals on the switch. Set the meter to "RX1" and touch a probe to each terminal. A reading of infinity should be seen. Next, while still holding the probes on the terminals, press the start switch. A reading of zero should be present.

If the switch does not pass either test, replace the switch with a new one.
Door Switch

If the door switch is faulty, the dryer will not run. To access the door switch, the top cover of the dryer must be removed. After the top is removed, open the dryer door and remove the two screws that hold the door switch on the dryer. Reach inside the dryer and remove the two wires off the door switch terminals and unsnap the door switch from the plastic mounting plate.

Set the ohm-meter to RX1 and touch each terminal with a probe. A reading of infinity should be seen. While still holding the terminal and probes together press the switch button. The reading should now be at zero.

Failure of either of those tests means the door switch needs to be replaced.
Drive Motor

The main drive motor could be faulty as well. It is located on the between the drum and the inside of the cabinet. Refer to the owners' manual for front cabinet removal and removal of the drum. To test the motor, disconnect the green ground wire and also the wiring harness from the motor.

Have the volt-ohm meter set to RX1. Place one probe on the white wire terminal and one on the brown wire terminal. A reading of between 28 and 40 ohms should be read. Next place probes on the white terminal and the blue terminal. This reading should be between 25 and 40 ohms. Finally place the probes on blue terminal and the brown terminal. The reading should now be between 58 and 70 ohms. Failure on any of those tests will require that the motor be replaced.

Hi Robert.

Thanks for the pics. I operate in UK and color codes here are different.
From what I can see the wiring in your picture does not match the US standard either.
The thermal fuse for example should have two blue terminals, not red and blue. The thermal fuse wires goes on one side to start, and on the other to the drive motor through the broken belt switch (if present).
The wiring at the blower must be revised and done again.

Here a service manual covering Kenmore 70 series dryers.

There is a wiring diagram at page 25.

Here a picture showing correct wiring: http://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/attachments/sears-kenmore/3298d1196129125-kenmore-dryer-model-110-86870100-wont-heat-ldrwp-checkpoints.jpg

About the red and yellow cable, the only red yellow wire in the diagram operates the switch for the guard function. The wire becomes hot and powers the motor when the guard switch is closed.

I HAVE AN OLDER MODEL KENMORE DRYER MODEL NUMBER 86872800 AND A NEWER HOME HOME WITH 4 CONNECTORS DRYER HAS ROOM FOR THREE HOW DO I CONNECT NEW CORD

You have to replace the dryer's 3-prong cord to 4-prong. Get yourself a 4-prong cord then on the terminal block at the rear of the dryer, connect the wires of the 4-prong cord to where the same wire colors (red, black, and white) of the 3-prong cord connects to. The only modification needs to be done is on the green/yellow stripe wire that connects from the white wire terminal to the dryer's cabinet. Remove this wire (green/yellow stripe) from the white wire terminal then connect it to the same wire color (green/yellow stripe) of the 4-prong cord and you are done. The new wire configuration would then be red, black, and white on the terminal block and green/yellow stripe wire on the cabinet.

I need to switch my three prong power chord to a four prong

your terminal block on the dryer will have three screws in a row and there will be a green screw on the outer skin next to the terminal block cover - your four-wire cord will have a white wire, red, black and green wires - white wire goes on the center screw of the terminal block, red wire goes on one of the other screws of the terminal block, it doesn't matter which, black wire goes on remaining terminal block screw, green wire goes to the green screw

Need to install a new dryer pigtail and need a wiring diagram please

If you have an old 3 wire set up, the middle wire is the neutral, the outside terminals are the two hot, which can be reversed.
If you have the four wire cord, the black and red wires are the hot wires (go to either of the outside terminals, one to each, of course) the white is the neutral, which goes to the center terminal, and the green is the ground which attaches to the dryer frame. On a four wire set up, the wire or metal strap which normally connects the center terminal on the dryer to the dryer frame should be removed.

Push to Start switch does not Start Kenmore Elite Dryer Mod # 11065944401

A likely cause is failure of the relay.
the start switch provides a current to energise a relay,
the relay latches open (draws energize current from switched circuit) until current path is broken by the timer or door switches.
if the wires have come off the relay(happens) or the coil of the relay has failed, there will be no start.

With plug pulled
trace the wires from the start switch, to the first device, looks like this 8fc4980.jpgmay be opaque. if any of the wires have come off refit them and retry start.
relay diagram looks like this 5a14628.gif test with meter for conduct between terminals labelled 85 86 (or Coil in other labelling standard),

or take to appliance parts store, can test and provide replacement on site.
Appliance part store will likely provide part labelled whirlpool, not a problem all the small parts are interchangeable

NOTE dryer relay may have up to 8 terminals,
2 for coil
3 (open close common) for each phase
