The computer stopped loading up and just went to black screen at first even in safe mode this happened and I was unable to do a system restore. After eventually getting it to safe mode and getting a system restore the computer would not go by a black screen with and icon. I have tried to rese it to factory settings but this has not worked as it gave the error message of be unable to complete the rest. So I had a Windows 7(Ultimate) disc from when I upgrade another pc to Windows 7,and tried a repair but that did not work so tried a fresh re install. It got fully loaded up untill the point it asked me for the Windows 7 product key. I put the key from the bottom of the laptop on and it does not recognise it. What can I do to get this working again

The Windows version you installed is different from the one which came as original on your system. Call and explain to Microsoft, this should be a free support call, making sure you can prove you paid for your software. A Windows DVD has all versions, reinstall with the same that was before when you get the choice screen. MS should be able to get you a new number or help you activate.

You will need to make sure that both versions of windows 7 are the same. The one that was previously on your laptop had to have been Windows 7 ultimate as well or the product key will not work. If it is a different version you will have to get the DVD for that version of windows 7 to get the product key to work. If it was windows 7 ultimate that you had on your laptop, then you need to call Microsoft and tell them that the product key isn't working. Since you likely had an OEM version of windows 7 on your computer it might not work with a generic install of the OS automatically. By calling microsoft they would sort out the issue and allow the activation to go through.

Black screen right after dell logo

start tapping f8 after you boot the machine, when given the boot menu, try to load safe mode, and see if it loads. if it does, then you need to do a system restore back to before you got the black screen. more than likely windows loaded an updated driver that disagrees with your system. try that and let me know what happens :)

Loads all files but nothing shows on the screen meaning does not show the logon screen

Restart your computer
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart
or
restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer

you could select the option start at last known configuration that worked this will tell you if and what file has been corrupted or missing then you will know if its a hardware issue then select restart if the problem still persists f8 back into safe mode you might need to select your operating system to load into safe mode

click start control panel administration tools computer management in the left panel events + to expand then system you will see all errors in right panel right click select properties this will tell you what has occurred and the time it occurred

you might use the system restore to restore your system to an earlier time click start all programs accessories system tools you should see your system restore option if it is a hardware issue the system restore might not work
hope this helps you

After loading the laptop, the screen goes black showing only a white mouse cursor that you are able to move. Even tried loading in safe modes but the page still doesn't load.

Please restart the computer in safe mode and check if that is loading. If safe mode loads well, then run system restore (Steps depend on the windows version you have) and restore your computer to a earlier date (say 1 or 2 days earlier) when you know that your computer was working fine.

If you cannot login to safe mode then we might have to do a manual registry restore
Please use the link to know more about it. If you are going to use the step, please keep a printout handy of the instructions.

For XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
(follow the manual steps)

For Vista & Windows 7
Boot from OS DVD and run startup repair.

Hi, Everytime I turn on my DELL Dimension 5150 I am faced with the following message: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE...

This sounds like it can not mount your boot file from hard drive which needs to load windows. Sometimes this will happen if you leave a floppy, cd or some kinda usb flash drive in computer when rebooting and it does not happen always. I would try to boot in to safe mode as message is saying. To boot in to safe mode modet computers use F8 key. Turn off your pc and then as soon as you push power button start tapping key F8 located on top of keyboard. You can stop once you get screen that says Advanced startup menu. Choose option Safe mode and press enter. You will need to use arrows to make selection. Once you choose safe mode wait for the loading to be done and then choose ether your windows name or Administrator. Once in safe mode you will get error message just ignore it and press yes. When windwos comes up try to do a restore to previous date. Go to start-programs-accessories-system tools-system restore.in system restore choose restore to earlier time and on the calendar choose date that your computer was working fine. I usually go even week prior to when computer stopped working. Your data will be saved but if you have installed some programs you might have to reinstall them. Hope this helps.

Compaq Presario SR1000 won't boot up completely :(

Hi Thanks for your question
I would suggest to enter "safe mode" and then do system restore again. To do this you need to follow these steps.
1.Turn your PC on and press F8 on start up. This should take you to the screen asking what you want to do. 2. Choose safe mode from the list and press enter. 3. Once safe mode loads you should be asked if you want to restore your system to previous state. Just press no to run system restore and follow steps (you already know how to do this)
Shutting your computer down without closing operation system properly may cause start up issues like this one.
I hope this helps you. Good luck

Error loading up system

If you can get into safe mode by pressing F8 when you first turn on the computer then you can possibly do a system restore on it back to the last date the computer was last working properly.

If you can't get into safe mode then you'll need to restore your computer back to factory defaults like you just got it out of the box.
