What is the make and model number of the laptop? If you have the manual , the system specifications should be there. In most cases you'd be better off getting a faster laptop bye the time you buy a processor and pay someone to install it. your still only as fast as your slowest component.

How do i find the specs for gateway model#mx6214

This is Gateway Support > Gateway MX6214 Notebook PC > Main Support page,

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/BladeC/1009028nv.shtml

Click on Specifications in the list.
Now go back to the main page, and click on Components.

With the information on the two pages, you know now;

A) Processor:
Intel Celeron M 420. (Model 420)

The Pentium-M based Celeron M 420, (Yonah-1024 Core), uses a Socket M processor socket,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Celeron_microprocessors#.22Yonah-1024.22_.2865_nm.29

Has a 533MegaHertz Front Side Bus. (533MHz FSB)
Uses 1.0 to 1.3 Volts (DC)

B) Processor Socket:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_M

C) Motherboard Chipset:
Intel 940GML,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Core.2FCore_2_mobile_chipsets

You see what is supported by the motherboard chipset, Intel 940GML.
Processors supported (Official);
Intel Celeron M, Intel Core Solo, and Intel Pentium Dual Core.

An Intel Celeron processor is less than a comparable Pentium processor.
This is because it has less Cache. Usually around half of a Pentium based processor.

Processor Cache:
A small memory area for the Processor. Operates at the same Frequency Rate as the processor, therefore the First memory area a processor accesses.

( Frequency Rate = 'Speed'.
Speed; The term Intel used a long time ago, to help consumers compare 'power', and has stuck.

Example:
The Intel Celeron M model 420 mobile processor, can operate Up To a frequency rate of 1.6GigaHertz, or also stated as 1600MegaHertz.
{1.6GHz/1600MHz}

Mega = Approximately 1 Million in computer terms
Giga = Approximately 1 Billion in computer terms
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second.

The Intel Celeron M 420 can operate UP TO 1.6 Billion Cycles per Second )

Crude example of Cache;
You are writing a thesis, and you need additional information.
Where is it? Down in the basement, no light, under the stairs, in a box, last book on the bottom.

Down the stairs you go flashlight in hand. Book dug out, back upstairs, and open the book to the page/s you need.
Need more info? Yep. Back down in the basement you go.

OR,
You tap a few keys on the keyboard, for the computer in front of you, and have your information in seconds.

Less Cache? = Basement scenario
More cache? = Computer scenario

Pentium based processors have more Cache, than a comparable Celeron based processor.

You can also see the amount of Ram Memory support, and what type of Ram Memory is supported.

DDR2 Sdram at either 400MegaHertz, or 533MHz.

(PC2-3200, and PC2-4200, respectively, AND is SO-DIMM style for laptops. PC2-4200 is also known as PC2-4300. Just depends on the ram manufacturer)

2GigaByte maximum amount. (2GB)

D) Graphics:
Integrated Graphics. (Not a graphics card)
Intel GMA 950,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_950

E) LCD screen:
15.4 Inch Widescreen, WXGA, and it's based on the Thin Film Transistor technology. (TFT)

(Always, always, always, look at the manufacturer name, and model number, { Manufacturer ID} on the back of the LCD screen. Make SURE you are getting THE LCD screen you need )

Service Manual? (Free),

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-gateway

Go to the line that starts with Gateway 400. (400 in blue)
Drop down to the second line, scroll across, and click on the blue -
MX6200.
(The Gateway MX6214 Notebook PC is part of the MX6200 series )

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name, (MX6200), it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

Can I upgrade my CPU to an Intel Core 2 duo 1.7

You are basically limited to what was optional on the model. So you can only upgrade to one of the following cpus:

Intel Pentium M 745 (1.8-GHz) with 400-MHz front
side bus (FSB)
Intel Pentium M 735 (1.7-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Pentium M 710 TJ85 (1.4-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB;
operates at a lower temperature than other processors
Intel Celeron M 340 (1.5-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Celeron M 330 (1.4-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB

And you are limted to 2gb of ram max on this model.

Can you do a cpu upgrade on Acer Travelmate 2480-2968? If so what type of intel CPU will work on this machine?

The following CPUs are supported by the Acer TravelMate 2480:
Intel Celeron M processor 410/420/430/440/450 (1 MB L2 cache, 1.46/1.60/1.73/1.86/2 GHz, 533 MHz FSB) or higher.

So, based upon the speed of the CPU you currently have, you can decide whether you need a CPU upgrade or not.

Acer aspire 3680-2022 with vista is just too slow. Intel celeron M processor 420; 1.6 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, IMB L2 Cache; 80 GB HDD; 512MB DDR2; Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

More memory will make a difference. Vista is a memory hog and 512 is really not enough. You don't say what version of Vista you have but Microsoft say the min spec for Home Basic is 512MB, other flavours 1GB. Gety as much in as your mainboard will support - 2GB would be my minimum..

A Celeron 1.6 processor isn't going to be that fast if you are running a lot of apps and not much you can do about that (pretty unlikely you can upgrade; very few laptop mainboards let you).

There are a few tweaks you can make that may help but you (defrag, set Windows to better performance rather than better display, format and re-install) but stick some more memory in and see how you go.

I want to upgrade my hpdv1000 pentium M processor whats the maximum upgrade allowed for this? i have upgraded it to 2gb ram from 512mb and 250gb hd from 60gb and its doin fine.

You should be able to upgrade the CPU, since it seems that the DV1000's motherboard uses a socket CPU design. But, obviously, HP would rather have you choose the CPU that you want from the beginning and stick with it.
The first thing to do is to check HP website to see what other configurations were/are sold for your model. If they sell it with faster CPUs then you can upgrade to one of them...

PLEASE NOTE:
In order for a particular processor to be compatible with a particular laptop:
(1) the processor must be physically compatible with the laptop socket, in your case I thing you have a Soket 479 processor
(2) the laptop chipset must support the processor.
(3) the chipset front side bus speed must match the processor front side bus speed, in your case 400Mhz.
(4) the laptop BIOS must support the processor.

So I listed here processors with FSB at 400Mhz, I gues that DV1000 as a 855GM Motherboard that supports only 400Mhz with Socket 479

Hi, I have HP dv4000 model, Intel Pentium 1.60 GHz processors, Can I upgrade the processor? And what is the maximum upgrade for the processor? Regards, for more details and features...

According to the service manual, these are the processors your notebook will handle:

Part#
Intel Pentium M 2.13-GHz 396700-001
Intel Pentium M 2.00-GHz 396699-001
Intel Pentium M 1.86-GHz 393327-001
Intel Pentium M 1.73-GHz 383474-001
Intel Pentium M 1.60-GHz 383473-001 and 396698-001

Intel Celeron M 1.50-GHz 383471-001
Intel Celeron M 1.40-GHz 396697-001
Intel Celeron M 1.30-GHz 389036-001

So it looks like the Pentium 2.13GHZ is the top one.

Here is a link to the service manual for reference: This is on page 5-24.

Thanks fro using Fixya. A Fixya rating would be most appreciated.
