Canon G9 stopped working

My G9 has stopped working leaving the lens extended. I've tried re charging the battery and with and without the memory card. the camera has not been dropped is there a factory reset procedure that I should follow or is it as I guess taking it back to Canon - I've had the camera since February 08 and amazed at the results I've had with it - so any help would be very welcomed,

My G9 stopped working with the lens extended, and the screen just says "lens error, restart camera". I have tried this, with and without memory card, tried taking battery out and reinserting it, to no avail. I would appreciate any help! Love this camera, but haven't had it over a year.

same thing happened to me did anyone call cannon?

  • mjwinter Nov 28, 2008

Same problem. I can produce it by shooting a vertical shot with the grip facing down - but that is not the only cause

  • Anonymous Dec 02, 2008

Wow, weird. Me too-- like they were all programmed to self-destruct at the same time! At first it was a lens error. Then it just wouldn't turn on. Worked a couple times, now nothing. . . no life.

  • Anonymous Dec 03, 2008

I use mine every day.  Mine has locked up as well...won't turn on at all.  Any ideas?

  • gill6201 Dec 03, 2008

Same problem with me. The battery is fine and all of a sudden from one day to the next it just stopped working. Recall anyone?

  • Anonymous Dec 10, 2008

It just now happened to me. The same "lens error, restart camera" - did it - no luck - did it again - no luck. I am now recharging my battery, but, by reading all these issues - I can see that re-charging the battery is not going to help. Gees! what a situation this camera has caused for all of us.

Your camera probably got the loose screw syndrome that these G7 and G9 models many times get. It needs to be repair and should be done professionally, mostly it's a board inside that has to be replaced. The correction to the screws inside of the camera should also be done, it costs $89 for everything at this site: They're excellent for fixing this problem since they are familiar with it and they include the correction automatically so the screws won't come loose again. Plus if it's something else causing the no power syndrome, it's still the same price with them. The work there is excellent and a plus is they only work on Canons, they are very familiar with this G9 problem.

The DC/DC board or main board may short.
the DC/DC board is not cheap if you can find one.
maybe here is a cheaper way to solve this problem, but too long to post here, please check this link:

Hey guys,

hopefully... with some luck you all will see this?

i had the same problem, and was so- scared that id have to buy a new camera, then, started cursing CANON!

but, luckily i was still under warranty...
(btw, i was also nervous about the whole CANON warranty bc of all the "horror" stories i read; turns out that they re AWESOME! if i was bill gates, id give them all christmas bonuses... ha, or at least tech #184 ;)

anyways, took then 7 days, easy-peasy...

so, the "PROBLEM" is called:

now- i know this doesnt help you fix it at home, or where ever you are in the world; but- hopefully, it gives you some rest of heart knowing what problem is, and more importantly called...

I sent my dead G9, still under warranty, insured, to Canon on Nov. 21. I got it back on Dec. 3, with a note that they had replaced the cameras guts. Works like a charm now. Outside of warranty, I'd suggest contacting Canon.

I turned my Cannon G9 camera on and 'lens error. restart camera' is the message I see. The lens will not retract and the camera does not function at all except for the message and the opening...

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Will not turn on

This is likely the cause of an internal screw that has come loose, it's very common on the G9. A great place to get help with this G9 problem is: since they just specialize in these powershots. They not only have the fix available but they have the correction so this never comes back, that comes with their no power service for the G9's automatically. I hope that helps, that's the place if you need help with a powershot, best of luck

Our G9 is stuck with the lens zoomed out. If we turn it on or turn it off, no change, stuck.

Go with this place: They charge $89 for the lens error service package on the G9 and they do excellent work. The neat thing with them is they don't just do the repair, they service the camera up as well, plus shipping going back is included in their service package too which is nice. Much more affordable than Canon and they are experts on the Powershots, the Canons are all they specialize in! I hope that helps you with getting it going again.

My Canon G9 won't turn on as well!! HELP PLEASE!!

Sounds like you have the short in the camera that a lot of people get on this model. A terrific place for help with this problem is: It runs $89 all in with the servicing for the camera included. They just work on the Powershots exclusively. They're very familiar with this no power problem on the G9. An excellent place if you need service for a Powershot.

Canon power shot g9 lens

Your best bet would be to have it serviced by a professional to get you going again, those are really excellent cameras. If you'd like to have it repaired, you can have the G9's repaired here: This place just does the Canons exclusively, they don't work on any other models. The best part, the work through them is superb and they are not expensive at all. It runs $89 for parts / labor on the repair and the servicing for the camera included. Plus they cover shipping back which we like. The best part is the work through them just excellent on the Canons, they'd be the place if you want to have it fixed. Hope that helps you with it, all the best. That's a great little camera.

Cannon G7 need help

Had the same problem a few months ago. There was a high pitchedwhisltle and I think the screen said "lens fault.turn off camera" or something similar.Bought a G9 to replace as the 7 was out of guarantee but sent the 9 back to the e-bay reseller as it was obviously secondhand with grit around the lens ring and the viewfinder.Ebay never again!.So 3 months ago ago I tried the G7 again with a fresh charged battery before I consigned the camera to the loft.I noticed that each time i switched on the whistle and message was there but the lens extended slightly further each timeso I kept rebooting until the lens was fully extended.Turned the camera off and on again and everything was back to normal. It seems that this may be Canons protocol when a camera goes back. Its been absolutely fine until today. It wont boot up at all.I have tried 2 fresh charged batteries and its dead.Any ideas anyone?

Lens error Help please

The Lens Error usually means the lens has sand or another obstruction stopping it from retracting.
