God only kn ows

My 1200 sporty ideals fine, my problem starts when i try to ride. I get her going through the gears and she just chocks out. About 4th gear it will just die, seems to be gasping for fuel. As long as i just sit on the road it's fine. I have checked all the fuel system and can't seem to find anything wrong.

After bike is warmed up does it rev up without dying , you may have a float valve sticking or improrer adjustment remove carb. and check height of float and that the valve moves freely and clean all passages (blow them out)

Could be a faulty coil or ignition mod. Your local service dep should be able to troubleshoot it.

Ignition module; several other posts like this; run it in the garage and use heat gun or hair dryer to heat up "cone" (if module in there) if it dies replace the module; there is a break in there that only show up when it warms up. if this isn't your problem clarify year model FI/carb etc; ign module is most common problem/cause

Sound like the float isn't set correctly. it runs out of gas in the upper registers. it could also be a bad petcock.

I have 2000 xlh sportster 1200 the bike idles fine runs fine but will shut off when oil guage reaches a little over 150 degrees any ideas

It sounds electrical and as it's a Sporty, I suggest a temperature-related dry joint opening up in the wiring. One popular candidate would be the earthing strap. It's worth checking continuity with a VOM when engine is hot. It may have a vibration crack. 66C is quite cool for a sportster oil temperature, so I guess you have this problem on every long ride? Good Luck.

Engine stalling in park and drive.

Just a shot in the dark here. Mikuni carbs were problamatic on that engine. I remember them well. They had internal vacuum leaks and diapragm leaks just like you describe. I dont kn ow if you can get it any more but the fix used to be a new reman carb. they were not rebuildable. But I always wondered why you coul not have a base plate adapter made by a machine shop to adapt any other simpler carb to it? as long as your cfm rating was the same--ya know? Like take a holley 2 barrel off a k-car and adapt it on. Anyway I hope I helped. But that is what it sounds like. Carb replacement. Thanks

04 Sportster 883 gearbox Clunk.

Big Twins clunk too, especially into 1st with a cold motor, even if you free the clutch off first. When I remember, I snick it into gear, pull in the clutch and roll it back and forward to free off the plates. And it still clunks. Sometimes, you will slip from neutral into 1st, almost with no effort, and no clunk and so smooth you don't believe it's engaged (but it is). Weird. I have smooth changes from 4th to 5th and back again, sometimes from 3rd to 4th, but 3rd to second and second to 1st are always a BIG clunk, even if you give it some stick to try and match the revs before changing down. I now go from second to neutral and then into 1st, which is not a lot of fun when you are negotiating a hairpin on Glenquaich at the time... A tighter primary chain seems to reduce the clunk, and there are those who say that auto primary adjusters/tensioners (does a Sporty have one of them?) reduce the clunk. Some disagree... Assume you find it's much better when it's hot..
