Question about Printers & Copiers

4 Answers

I own a Canon Pixma MP530 all-in-one fax, copier, printer, scanner. I cannot send or receive faxes since I switched my Comcast voip phone line from my office to my home phone, along with my MP530. The fax function and my cordless Vtech phone with answering machine share the same line. They are on different floors and are not connected to each other. The phone works fine, as does the message machine, but faxes do not come through. Previously, Canon support people advised me to cancel Comcast voicemail because it jumps in before the MP530 can receive a fax. The MP530 is set for answer mode, ecm turned off, with Rx speed at 9600--all as Canon advised. In the previous configuration Canon also advised plugging the base phone into the MP530. Did this also. As indicated, I cannot tie the two together because the base phone is now on a different floor. There is a "live" phone jack in my office to which the fax machine is now plugged. The home phone is plugged into another jack upstairs. What do I do, coach? Are the settings correct? Have I linked the phone line and the MP530 correctly? Any other suggestions to make this machine send and receive faxes, and still allow me to receive phone messages? Thanks for your help. John Gould

I have checked the manual and have followed the advice I received from the Canon help people. Checking the manual again will probably not help.
I need specific advice on what the set up should be and what the settings should be.

    See my previous comment.
If you experts can't tell me what configuration should be, I will be disappointed. The fact that Comcast is sometimes problematic or that Canon was possibly disingenuous does not solve my problem. The "solutions" offered are particularly unhelpful because the MP530 has worked on voip in the past.
Where are the real experts on this?

Are you using a router? Try to reduce the MTU of your router to 1400 then do a power cycle. Unplug the router and the modem for about 30 seconds. Plug the modem first, when the lights are steady, turn on the router. Check if the fax works now.;

For the receiving problem:
since the fax & tam shares one line, whoever answers first, gets the line regardless if it's a fax or voice.

but since you mentioned it is now not working when you switched to VOIP. fax was developed & designed with analog phone lines in mind. VOIP is digital and totally different from analog even though service providers "marketing strategy" says it's 100% compatible.

comcast for example offers a fax service, because they know that normal fax equipments will not 100% work on VOIP. There are some manufacturers that make FOIP (Fax Over IP) products.

First try one step. The line which you have connected with the Fax, unplug any other phone from that line.
Call that number and see whether it rings or you get a fax tone.

In General is the AIO is directly connected to a live phoneline, than it should work fine.
After connecting the line, when you call the number we can find out whether you are getting a fax tone or whether the fax machine is answering all the calls.

Also check the Fax receiving mode.

Setting the fax receive mode MP530

    Receive Mode Setting
On the operation panel, press the following buttons to select the appropriate receive mode.

    1. Press .

    2. Press

    .

    3. Press the right or left arrow button to select [Receive mode set], then press .

    4. Press the right or left arrow button to select the receive mode that best suits your needs, then press .

FAX ONLY MODE: When you want to receive only faxes automatically with your machine, or have a dedicated telephone line for FAX use only.

MANUAL MODE: When you receive mainly voice calls and sometimes faxes, or want to receive faxes manually.

ANS MACHINE MODE: When you want to receive voice messages on your answering machine and receive faxes automatically.

FAX/TEL AUTO SW: When you want to receive faxes automatically as well as voice calls.

DRPD: When you have subscribed to a DRPD service with your telephone company.

    5. Press repeatedly to return to fax standby mode.

SOURCE: Pixma MP530 Fax Problems

I am having a similar problem. You do have to connect your phone to the jack in the machine in the "Phone" jack slot, as well as have another line out to the jack in the wall in the "L" slot. That is all I know. I am having problems with my voicemail. Either I can received voicemail, and no faxes, or faxes, and no voicemail (fax picks up at specified number of rings). It is EXTREMELY frustrating. The machine is *supposed* to be able to discern between phone calls and faxes..and that is not happening.

Have you come across a solution? Aghhhhh!

Can cannon mx 410 fax be used with voip?

If you want to get 100% reliable voip, just get an online provider account. I would advice you popfax.com - send & receive faxes, get many additional features and so on.

I have a cannon pixma mx870 printer and I cannot receive faxes. I have unplugged all the phones in the house and checked the phone line that is hooked up to the printer.

Plug a phone into the little telephone extension lead that came with the machine to see if you get a dial tone. If you do then get someone to send you a fax and answer it with that phone. press the start button and it should go into receive. Make sure you are using the genuine canon lead too and its plugged into the "Line" socket and not the "Tel" one.

Switched to comcast digital voice- unable to send out faxes now.

If you've changed to VOIP you might have to set some of the parameters in your VOIP terminal adaptor to allow faxes. Also check whether you need to dial 9 or not

I just received a fax on my mp530 and it said received in memory. How do I print it out?

I have a Canon MP but not your model. Try this.

Click Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/Fax/Fax Console

Then click Inbox, double click the fax and print it if you wish. There are options to print as soon as the fax is received, or you can send faxes to Desktop, or both options.

I can't send faxes on my Canon Pixma MP530 on digital phone line

They're telling you your hardward doesn't play nice with their hardware. A few suggestions:

Update your printer, and see if any improvement is found:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=123&modelid=13371#DownloadDetailAct

If that doesn't work, see if your computer has a fax modem that itself can be updated and can support the hardware. Your multifunction printer has a scanner; you can scan in the things you want to fax, then fax from the computer if the computer can fax. This is starting to look like a Dr. Seuss book.

You can also try to learn more about what the problems are and look elsewhere. Your "digital" phone is actually voice over Internet, something VOIP. If you Google for VOIP FAX you'll find some information, like this:

Can't send fax

Greetings,

Seems that you accidentally ended the chat session.

Here's what i got, your phone service is on VOIP

VoIP is voice transmission over a broadband Internet connection instead of a standard phone line. Basically, Vonage converts your voice into data and sends it like an email.

Fax machines, like yours, are designed to work with the regular phone lines. As your phone line is digital, the functionality of your all-in-one printer & fax cannot be guaranteed.

Vonage also offers a dedicated fax service and you might want inquire them about that.

Keep us posted and thank you for using our service.
