I've used my flash drive for more than one year. Suddenly when I edit documents or try to save something new to it, I get the "write-protected" message. HEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

  • Anonymous Oct 26, 2008

I have a PNY 4 Gb data stick. Used it for a week, and its almost full, then suddenly I get the message saying I cannot write to it as it is write-protected. I cannot delete any data either (i thought it was maybe because it was full), and I did try. The guy at the computer shop said re-format it, after a lot of looking up I did what they said - this was exciting -

    Open My Computer

Right-click on the flash drive and choose Format

I just looked at Capacity, File system, Allocation unit size and left these as the defaults on the principle "leave well alone" as these looked ok to me.

Then - wait for it, drum roll and trumpet fanfare -

"...cannot format as it is write-protected"

    Ugh ! ?

A solution might be to throw it in the bin and not buy PNY any more,

unless there is something I havnt thought of.

Before you suggest it, no, there isnt a little switch on the side of the data stick to change the write-protection.

    Please, PNY, can you help?

Now it is totally worthless as I can not put anything on or take anything off of it with out the error message that it is write protected please remove write protection. I would remove it if I could! Anyone have a solution???

  • Anonymous Apr 29, 2009

You have to find the pin number that removes the writen protection. I cant find mine... so i am scewedd

  • Jinva May 04, 2009

Yep, used it only once, but now it' "write protected" and won't let me put anything on it for my phone. Whatever this pin number is, I don't have it or know where it is, so this indeed is ********.

Device media is write protected

To disable writing access to USB drives and make all USB drives has only read-only access, follow these steps:
  1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
  3. Create a New Key named as StorageDevicePolicies.
  4. Highlight StorageDevicePolicies, and then create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value named as WriteProtect.
  5. Double click on WriteProtect, and set its value data to 1. write-protect-usb.jpg
Once set, all users on the computer is now blocked and prevented from copying, transferring or writing any files, documents and data to the USB disk drives, without the need to restart or reboot computer. Any attempt to download or copy files to USB drive will return the following error message:
The disk is write protected.
The media is write-protected.
Remove the write protection or use another disk.
usb-removable-disk-write-protected.jpg To revert and remove the blocked write access to USB drivers, just delete the StorageDevicePolicies registry key, or delete the WriteProtect registry entry, or change the value data for WriteProtect to 0.
For user who doesn't want to manually editing the registry, simply download the following registry registration files to enable or disable the write protection (block writing attempt) to USB removable drive. Double click the .reg file unpacked from the .zip archive to merge the registry key entries.
Download DisableWriteToUSB.reg
Download EnableWriteToUSB.reg
The trick works in Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

How to remove write protected memory card

Hello sir
  • Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from or
  • 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
  • 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
  • 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
  • 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
  • 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

    Pendrive write protection removing

Hey, the transcend pen drives usually have a small switch on the side of it, ie to turn the write protect on and off, usually a small lock symbol on it, the problem with unreadable files names etc, could be a corrupt partition, i would suggest formatting the drive as long as you aint got any important information on it,

    All the best
