Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

HP PSC 1410 When I switch on a letter E appears against the second (Orange) button and nothing seems to function thereafter.I have checked Control Panel/ Printers And the Icon shows ready. I cannot detect the double blip when I put on my laptop Can you please help Thanks & Regards Peter

    I don't see any paper stuck any where. But the check paper light is still lit. I've taken it apart, turned it upside down and all around to see if I could loosen anything that might be stuck, but still, a great big blinking E.

Please work with me through this as it may be a fairly lengthy troubleshooting process. While we may hit the problem on one of the first tries, it may take several back and forth communications to narrow down the source of the problem. I may also need additional information regarding your operational environment to identify the issue. The majority of this response to your issue presumes that you are utilizing Windows OS on your PC, and although there are many similarities between XP & Vista, there are also many differences. This has been prepared, at least initially, with Windows XP in mind. Please advise if this is incorrect. Further, if your issue is not resolved, please provide the service pack level (SP) of the OS you are using. (Have you installed XP SP3 or Vista SP1, and if you are on Vista, which version?)

Typically an "E" would be seen (indicating an error) on the button related to copies (the third button) rather than the second. The second button, which should evidence a circled X on the printer overlay above, is generally known as "Cancel" or "Reset". The fact that an E is displayed here may indicate either a rather simple issue, or an extremely complex one. Additionally, if there is an error with the basic printer functions, there should/could be additional lights or messages displayed - are there or have there been any?

First, have you attempted these basic troubleshooting tasks? (I have listed them, rather than continuing with a long list of "Have you..." questions.)

  • Pressed the button to clear the error, as it is for canceling operations in progress or resetting the printer?
  • Double-checked all connections - specifically the USB connection between the printer and the PC?
  • Verified that all ink cartridges are properly placed and functional? You could print a test page to ensure that this is not an issue, if the printer will work without the PC.
  • Made certain that the paper type setting agrees with the type of paper in the printer? A conflict can cause the printer not to function.
  • Attempted to use the printer attached to another USB port, another PC, or switched USB cables to eliminate the possibility of USB communication trouble?
  • Had any type of paper jam recently, as minute amounts of paper stuck inside the machine can wreak havoc?
  • Restarted the PC with the printer turned on? If the system tray icon was closed inappropriately, restarting the PC can clear this.
  • Ascertained that the length of the USB cable is less than 3 meters, as this is the limit for USB to function properly?
Was there any issue with the printer the last time it was used? How long have you been using it, and have you had other problems previously? Has anything been done, either to your PC or your printer, since it was last successfully used, such as a change in location, connected to new PC, upgraded software for PC or printer, changed the driver, etc.? Do you use the HP Image Zone or HP Solution Center software? Either can provide additional information regarding status of individual items.

Have you attempted to make a copy, for instance, without using the PC? This one basic task would tell us a great deal about whether the problem resides primarily with the printer itself, or with some interaction between the printer and the PC.

Finally, as I have given you quite a list of "to do" items here, I will stop for now and await your feedback. If you will post back to this solution, I will receive notification by email and can return to assist you further. One last thing, though, is that you should verify that all necessary updates have been downloaded and installed, particularly if all of the above items have had no effect.     I m also having the same issue. I have tried to use printer independently of PC, but still it is not working. I have an empty black cartridge so i replaced it with the problematic one then the "E" problem got resolved. But again after inserting the problematic one it shows same error

Mine's doing the same.

Just started - but this is the first time I haven't used a genune HP cartridge. May be acoincidence I'm not sure.
