Aspire 7720 won't allow windows to load up.

My norton protection ran out yesterday so I installed AVG and removed Norton. The laptop then recomended shutting down so I did this. It now gets to the sign in stage of windows, but after typing the password it shuts down. Is there any way that I can reset the laptop back to original settings?

Normally one would press F8 and perhaps choose to go back to a known working date, or choose safe mode, which hopefully will allow you to boot up. Then you should be able to ensure that Norton has been removed completely. Try this first.

My pavilion dv7 17" won't allow me to install mcafee anti virus

Before you can do anything, uninstall norton antivirus, go to control panel and click on it, a list of items will come up, when norton shows select remove and wait for the program to uninstall, and restart the computer, go back in and remove norton live update and any other program pertaining to norton. If you have windows 7 go to my computer and "click" on top select uninstall, and follow the outline above. Now you should be able to install the program.

System has a virus mbr invected by bloodhpund.mbr how do I delete this. I purchased Norton 2010 but it won't remopve the problem says it needs to be installed but can't get into system to install.

You're Acer probably has Rescue and Recovery™ installed. Rescue and Recovery is a suite of self-recovery tools to help you diagnose, get help, and recover your system.

When you set the Bloodhound heuristics in Norton AntiVirus to it's highest setting you probably ran a virus scan and saw a Norton AntiVirus alert that states that it's detected a potential threat, Bloodhound.MBR. But this is probably not a virus but the recovery software on your laptop.

Solution:

If you have IBM Rescue and Recovery and Norton AntiVirus Bloodhound heuristics are configured to the highest setting, Norton AntiVirus may alert you with a Bloodhound.MBR detection when you run a virus scan. To avoid this, configure your Bloodhound heuristics to the default setting.

To reset Bloodhound to the default setting
  1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus was installed as part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start one of those programs.
  2. Click Options.
If you see a submenu, then click Norton AntiVirus.
  3. Click Auto-Protect.
  4. Click Bloodhound.
  5. Click Default level of protection (recommended).
  6. Click OK
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for Manual Scan.
In step 3, substitute Manual Scan for Auto-Protect.
  8. Exit Norton AntiVirus.

Yesterday intalled norton and today I Tried to install microsof works and tmy computer dont reconiced the driver

This is one of the main problems with Norton...believe it or not, go to the Norton site and download their Norton removal tool. Remove Norton, go to the device manager in the control panel and uninstall the device that is having the problem. Shut the computer down and reboot. When the computer reboots, make sure you have an internet connection and when windows starts it will recognize the hardware connected to the system and attempt to load drivers for it, it may even ask you if it can search windows update for the latest driver, choose yes and let windows install the device. Try to install your MS works again.

Do I need a Norton-type security for my laptop, or is AVG sufficient ?

Hi,
AVG is more than sufficient for a home computer.
Norton takes quite a lot of system resources and slows computers down dramatically. AVG on the other hand uses 2/3rds less resources than Norton and is just as good.

Reagrds.

Replacing Norton with anything else

Norton is a real pain, and can be a bigger pain to get rid of. First, go to filehippo.com and download CCleaner, and also download AVG, but save the AVG download to the desktop. After removing Norton you will be using AVG for your antivirus. Once you have the CCleaner installed, open the tools section on the left. This is an uninstaller, it works considerably better than the add/remove programs section of Windows. Remove anything that reads Norton. This is where it may get tricky, Norton has a couple of blocking programs built in that try to keep you from using another antivirus, or removing Norton. So, the uninstall may run the first try, or you may get a message to the effect of the updater is running. If you get this message, then you will need to open Norton, go into the settings, and turn off everything. Then try the uninstall again. Once you've uninstalled all Norton related programs, run the registry cleaner. Norton likes to leave a little blocker in the registry that prevents the install of other antiviruses. Noe that this is done, you're ready to install the AVG. NOTE at one point there will be a section that will install the AVG internet toolbar, uncheck this box, you don't need it, and once it's installed you can't remove it without removing and reinstalling AVG. Some finer points about AVG is very little maintenance,it updates automatically, will scan at a time preset by you, so as to not hinder your use at the time of the scan, it protects against spyware and adware along with the antivirus, and has real time internet security without using hardly any resources. I believe you will be happy with it. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
