All three colors have seperated and appear kind of like a 3d movie. Is this something we can fix on our own? We have experience with soldering and minor electrical repair. Any help, guidance, repair...

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Hi. My Sony Videoscope XBR's Convergence Allignment

I happen to share this same problem. The alignment of the gridlines on the standard convergence panel are completely abnormal, and if I attempt to auto-adjust the TV, it flashes different colors on the sides of the screen , and then turns off the convergence settings.

you ewill need to replace the convergencev IC's and sometimes resistors and small fuses but do NOT replace any resistors or fuses untill you have replaced the convergence IC's and you can look up online(Google it!) for complete tvrepair kits for convergence repairs. Good Luck!!!!

BLURRY PICTURE I need to adjust the convergence board, HOW?if I need to repair the board with a repair kit does these kit work?how can I access this board,I have electronic as well as electric experience...

If you are able to do this, the switches woud be in the back of tv under the panel. Some tv's like most newer tv's are not adjustable except under main menu for color, tint, contrast and that is it.
This is when the convergance board needs to be replaced.

Sony KP-53V75 picture problem

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem as shown below. Doing so will only make things worse.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Do you have this problem on all inputs to the TV (Tuner,Video, Component, S-Video, etc...)? or just one? And does it affect the TV menu when it's brought up on the screen or no?

Convergence Problem?

The convergence IC most likly shorted, and burnt out the b+ feed resistor. There are two IC's inside this set to control the green red and blue convergence. They are most likly STK 392-###. The ### is another set of numbers that change depending on the model of the set. They each have three amps inside each one. You really should have both of the IC's replace with only original parts, as sub parts do not hold up and will not last as long as they should. Both IC's are soldered into place and if you decide to do this yourself, please be aware of the extemly high voltage inside of these puppys. there really are no user replaceable parts inside these sets unless you have solid state repair experience. Not only will yopu need the proper IC's, but you will have to find out what was burning. my best advice, Play it safe and call in a trained tech to assist you with this repair. The price should run someware between 300 to 450.00 to repair. Good Luck Please do not forget to rate this thread.

Problems with green convergence

Very common problem John with projection sets. They have High powered audio amps inside the sets to control the red, green, and blue convergence for the color alighnment on the screen. These amps blow out and should be replace all at one time. There are also resistors that can go out at the same time and your gonna have to have these replace also if they have any discoloration to them. This is not a job for the novice to attempt, as there are HI Voltage safety issues involved, and should be done by a trained tech. This repair should run you anywhere from $250.00 all the way up to $400.00 bucks, depending on where you live and who you get to repair the set. It's always better, in my opiniuon to call a factory authourized repair place as they should have all the service data and most parts for your set. Good Luck
