I have a canon ae-1 35mm that is having the same problem. This camera has been working fine, but the film advance will only go half way. I changed the film, but I don't know if I need a new battery or not?

I have bought a new k28 6V battery sometime last year. I don't think that the battery goes out that fast.

On the very bottom inside the plate there are many cog gears with levers and retractor springs. One may had come off causing your problem

This is a very common fault now on almost all AE1's and related models like the AV1.

Most of the time, it's due simply to age and dried out lubricants. The cameras need a strip down, thorough clean, and reassembly using fresh lubricants (known as a CLA service). It's wise during this process to remove and replace all light seals and mirror buffers as they'll have turned into a corrosive sticky black goo by now. The job is for professionals only due to the need for special tools and skills and the need to readjust the shutter speeds upon reassembly. Although it's not cheap (£80-£100 parts in the UK, cheaper in the USA and much cheaper in some Far Eastern countries such as Malaysia. If broken parts need replacing there is an extra charge), it's far cheaper than any new camera of the same quality and will ensure that the camera gives many more years of service. A freshly CLA'd camera has a resale value, a broken AE1 is usually completely worthless.

Ae1 when i advance film the shutter releases abd takes a photo

You have bad mirror release magnet.
The magnet became weak and not holding the mirror so when you wind, the mirror goes up and takes pictures or releases the shutter by itself.

The shutter wont work and the light meter doesn't move, also it wont advance the film. what could be wrong? I'm hoping it's the battery...

There is a large circular cover on the bottom of the camera. Inside is a button battery. Yours is dead and should be replaced with one of the same I.D.number.

Just purchased from an auction. the film advance

The first to check is the battery condition. Press the battery check button on the top cover and see where the meter needle rests in the VF. If the needle is above 5.6, battery is getting weak and it will cause irratic shutter release or no release. It's time to change the battery. If needle is below 5.6, then you have magnet problem or other fault. -James. For further assistance by email, go to www.camerarepairjapan.com

Canon AE1 Shutter Problem

It could be a simple issue with the shutter magnets, or something more severe with the electronics. What does the meter needle do when you push the shutter release down? With the speed dial set at 1/125 or higher and no lens, the needle should move fairly high. If it pegs to the bottom right away, that is a bad sign.

You can check the magnets from the bottom with the cover removed. (2 screws) You can release the mechanicals of the shutter by pushing the silver lever arm (located next to the plastic shield around the magnet on the rewind side of the camera) toward the front of the camera. Be mindful of the spring attached

Takes a picture when film advance lever is moved

The magnets that control the shutter are the likely suspect. Dirt and debris can cause them not to hold properly. Hence, it fires the shutter when you advance the film. It is something you can repair yourself. I can describe the procedure if you are interested.

Canon ae-1

To open the back pull on the rewind knob ( pulling up ) until back opens. Check that your 6 volt battery is ok ( ae -1 has an electronic shutter so will not work without a battery ): battery situated on the left hand side of the camera ( if it is facing you ) underneath small flip up door ( lock is at the bottom on the left of the small door ) . Check the battery by pressing the shutter release gently and seeing if your light meter needle moves. No movement ? replace battery. You have two modes for taking pictures : auto which is actually AV ( aperture priority) or full manual : both are set by moving the shutter speed dial on the top right hand side ( underneath film winding lever ).

The Canon AE-1 has an electronic triped shutter and cocking system and requiires a battery to function. So yes the battery is required. Goog luck!
