YAMAHA RX-V1800 no Sound

I got this receiver two weeks ago. I connected my DVD player using RCA cables and one HDMI cable out to my 32" Samsung LCD TV. I don't have speakers connected yet. What I want is to using the TV speakers. I thought the HDMI should carry both video and audio but I only have video. I have check the connections. They are correct. Any one can tell me what I did wrong here?

Thank you.

There is an HDMI setting that should be set to through instead of rxv1800. See page 88 of the manual

Hi...

According to the HDMI folks, your audio is IN the HDMI cable. Up to 8 channels of it.192 KHz digital

You should not lose any picture quality from the DVD player. I am currently having the similar setup with PS3 as the Blu-ray DVD player with HDMI and a Samsung DVD as regular player with component cable to a Samsung LCD TV. Remember the quality on Blu-ray is better than normal DVD so don't expect more than what it is.

Hookup diagram for Yamaha avr-863 receiver

It's the other way around.

Hook up the Cable box to the Amp; and the blu-ray to the amp, then connect amp to LCD.

you want to use the best available options for audio:
HDMI > Digital Optical > Digital Coax > standard RCA

And the similar for video:
HDMI > Component > SVideo > RCA cables

I would connect Blu-Ray via HDMI to Amp, and Cable box via HDMI to Amp. If your cable box does NOT support HDMI, but you have an HD package, ask your cable company for an upgraded box.

Yamaha RX-V663 - HDMI doesn't work.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a workaround:
  • as you posted, audio out of the DVD goes to the receiver;
  • HDMI out of the DVD goes to the Schaub Lorenz LCD.
Even if it were a compatibility issue or HDMI processor issue on the receiver, the above should get you going.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

No sound when using Panny plasma with RX-V3800

Let me see if I understand. You have one HDMI cable linking your TV and AVR? This is only to send video and sound out to your TV from the AVR you will not be able to send sound back over this same cable. You'll have to use the TVs audio out and connect it to an input of the AVR. The "HDMI out" on the AVR is just that Out and not In. For more questions I'd recommend checking out the RX-V3800 RX-V1800 thread over on AVSforum.com

Cable box HDMI connection probelm

This is from the Yamaha user guide:
The analog component video signals (with 480i (NTSC)/576i
(PAL) of resolution only) are converted to the S-video or
composite video signals and output at the VIDEO or S VIDEO
MONITOR OUT jacks.
The question is what kind of signals you get from your HD cable box.
