I need the install cd.

HP ended support at VISTA I am told.
got VISTA>??

the OS on your PC is OEM and not sold now, anywhere.
why not ask this at HP and not here.
ask them and hear the NO word from them GOD of HP.
btw , no PC told at all nor one clue what OS is there.
HP DVD557S is and external DRIVE.
is the PC ok, is that it and lost the drivers for the HP DVD557S
is that it.?
no internet means you lost the 2d path to drives. CD drivers or internet. gone
we go to a 2nd good PC with internet
and find the drives and put them on a thumb drive.
then move them to the off grid PC. failing
its 12 years old this drive. DVD.,my guess w7 driver disk
cam in the box new, LOST THAT or just bought a used DRIVE.DVD

the problem for you is no internet
making PnP plug and play dead and the drive with it born dead.
PnP is not an option nor is internet an option.
if you add any device new to any PC the internet must be working
or the new device fails most the time.
a PC101 factoid.
call HP and for the CD with the missing drivers.
here is the best answer of all
asked by others

"Hi,
HP supplies the Drivers for their Hardware.
You need the Drivers to make the Computer and HP's Hardware work together.
HP stopped Support and supplying Drivers for that Hardware at Vista.
http://support.hp.com/au-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-dvd-writer-dvd500-series/5244296/model/5057686
For any more information I suggest that you ask in the HP Support forums.
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/psg/

if you go to HP.com you see the erased every word about it
there forum has echos of the past on topic but no drivers now
they erased all vista and XP suppot
w7 next.

Its not reading Maxell writeable DVD's

There is software "inside" the DVD-writer.
    It is called "firmware".
The firmware reads the "label" off each disk,
to determine capacity, maximum recording-speed, and such parameters.

So, you need to access http://support.hp.com and search for updated firmware for your HP device, because the current firmware is _not_ recognizing the label on that one specific brand of "blank" media.
Updating the firmware will allow the recognition.

    Hi,

Please go here and download the live update from Samsung. This software is designed to automatically update you to the latest firmware via the internet. To get this service, customers have to install the Firmware LiveUpdate program on their computers.

Please download the live update full version if you have not used this software before. See link.

Simply follow the instructions as given and your software will be updated to the latest version required to run your CD/DVD writer with your computer.

    Change the dvd writer speed

you did not specify the company name of your writer.
you can change the speed of your writer using a tool called Media Code Speed Edit (MCSE) which is able tomake your DVD writer read and writer faster. If youhave LiteOn, Benq, PHILIPS, HP, LG, NEC, newer PIONEER, Cyberhome,Gigabyte, Samsung and Artec DVD writers, you have a good chance to playwith MCSE and speed up your drive.

MediaCodeSpeedEdit allows you to change the write speed for your mediaand to add new media codes to your firmware by renaming an alreadyavailable media code. The new media code name can be entered manuallyor can be imported from the DVD Identifier media code output to be surethat no special characters are lost. This kind of media code renamingwill remove the original media code name from the patched firmware, soit is no longer supported by the firmware.

Real adding of additional media code names would mean to shift andextend all internal media code tables or patching all media codescanner for all supported firmwares, which would be a quite complextask. So don't do it if you don't know what you are doing.

MCSE basically hack or edit the firmware for your DVD writer and thenyou flash the hacked firmware to update your DVD writer to supportfaster read or write speed. If you don't know where to get your DVDwriter's firmware, you can head to Media CodeSpeed Edit forum to get help. Here is the link to download MCSE

please rate the solution if you like..
