Question about Singer 2517 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Open Question

Hi We have an old Singer Mechanical Hand-Driven Machine that has served us really well over the years and is still mechanically sound. Recently, it appears something suddenly went amiss and we cannot figure out why it will not stitch. The stitches are most irregular despite all our efforts. Have oiled and thoroughly cleaned all moving parts. Any suggestions will be most welcome. Does Singer produce Engineers Manuals? If so, is there any likelyhood of us laying our hands on an outdated machine as this. It has served us so well, mostly because of its simplicity, which is one reason we are reluctant to part with it. We are convinced it is some minor refinement only that is necessary. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks -- Abi/Marci.

SOURCE: SINGER XL1000 SEWING MACHINE

Hi Peggy,

I know this want be easy for you.  I need any kind of part number you can get off the LCD screen.  Is it a display and you type the different stitch stuff into a keypad?  Or , is the LCD a touch screen that you touch the screen to select a stitch?  I do not have one of these Sewing machines, but I do Electronics repair. Is your Screen Black and not displaying anything?  I believe we can work through this and get you a repair solution. The back light may have gone out on the screen only. Please reply with more info, so that we can get you a solid solution.  By the way, Singer really does not make those anymore.  They are making a more modern Screen at this time. Usually after 5 years, the manufacturers stop making parts for a model. Good news though, we can work on repairing the one you have. Go to Ebay and see if we can buy a XL1000, or other venue to rob the parts from.

SOURCE: machine jams after a few stitches

Take a few stitches and look for where the thread is hanging as the loop slides over the bobbin case. If there is a rough spot causing it to hang, smooth it out with very fine steel wool make certain to remove all remains of the steel wool when you are finished. If the thread is catching between the bobbin case and some other surface, the clearance between the surfaces needs to be set and you should take it to a qualified repairman.

SOURCE: Singer futura ce-200 problem, pattern mis-alignment

I have had similar problems in the past.
Do you hear a noise from the embroidery unit when the misalignment occurs ? If so, I suspect that your issue may be that you have some resistance under the hoop. Is there extra material that may be rubbing on the machine or catching somewhere. I have found that if I use some masking tape to keep all of the extra material from hitting any other parts of the machine or dragging under the edge of the hoop this error does not occur. FYI: I also stopped using the "optimize stitch speed" option at the same time. I believe that material dragging was causing the problem, but I still wonder about the stitch speed optimization feature.

Will not zigzag or decorative stitches. New to these newer plastic style machines Always used older steel machines. This was given to me my by my sister who used it very little. Could cam be broken?

Hmm, I'm wondering if it has been cleaned and oiled recently. Older mechanicals require frequent TLC. Consult your owner's manual for cleaning and maintenance instructions:

Is your sewing machine mechanical (ie, not computerized)??? CAUTION--if your machine is computerized, do NOT proceed with the following suggestions.

If it is mechanical, have you cleaned and oiled your machine recently? Most mechanical sewing machine failures are because they have not been adequately and routinely oiled, the old oil has solidified and frozen the mechanics. I recommend Bernina oil or liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube (or similar good quality sewing machine oil) for mechanical machines--do NOT use 3-in-1, cooking oil, WD-40, or the sewing machine oil from your grandmother's sewing basket. (I am not associated with any Bernina dealer.)

If it is in fact frozen, pick up a bottle of liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil at the hardware store. Oil one or two drops in every oil hole (see your manual) and also every place where metal rubs on metal. But DO NOT oil any plastic gears, rubber, or belts. If it is still stiff or frozen, direct a hot handheld hair dryer into the top and bottom mechanism of your machine. See if that loosens it up. You may have to repeat.

Once your machine is working again, place a drop or two of good sewing machine oil as directed above. Be sure to use a small brush to clean the lint and dirt out of your machine, especially around the feed dogs and bobbin area. (Caution: Compressed air will sometimes force the dirt and lint into areas that cannot be cleaned.) And continue to use good quality sewing machine oil to keep it running. Recommendation: every time you change a bobbin, after 8 hours of sewing, or every six months if it is not in regular use.

The hand wheel just stays put while the inside of the machine seems to be moving, like something is slipping.

Move the bobbin winder to LEFT. Sounds to me like you didn't re-set after winding a bobbin.
Hope this helps!

Hi - I'm in the market for a sewing machine. I'm trying to decide between a Singer 4832C or a Necchi 3205FA. Which would u recommend? Thx.

I used to sell necchi's, I have used necchi's for over 30 years for sewing & quiting. I own a necchi model 4595 mechanical sewing machine, & a omega by necchi, model 6150, electronic, my husband does his quiting on it.I have made clothes & quits on both machines
I have never sold or tried a necchi 3205fa or a singer 4832c
all I ever had were old singers, which I have gotten rid of all them
make sure it has a operation manual with it.
make sure you can take it back if something is wrong with it.
happy sewing

Reverse stitching on a singer 514, HELP!

In the center of the stitch length knob (at the right side of the machine) is a button. You would push that button in to get the machine to reverse.

It might be the way you're asking that's confusing the problem. It's simple to remove the hand wheel, slip the belt over the track, and then replace the hand wheel. It really depends on the model of your machine - is it by chance a 328K?
