Hi If the compressor doesn't run, it is likely that the defrost timer is malfunctioning. This part is located near the compressor. To test the defrost timer:
Step 2: Disconnect the wires from the timer and timer motor. Remove the timer from its brackets by backing out two retaining screws.
Step 3: Test the defrost timer with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. Clip one probe of the VOM to each defrost timer -- not motor -- wire, and turn the timer control screw shaft until it clicks. If the defrost timer is functioning, the meter will read zero. If the needle jumps, the defrost timer is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type.
Step 4: Connect the new defrost timer the same way the old one was connected.
To check the defrost timer motor, clip one probe of the VOM to each motor wire, setting the scale to RX100. If the meter reads between about 500 and 3,000 ohms, the motor is functioning properly. If the meter reads higher than 3,000 ohms, the timer motor is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type. Connect the new motor the same way the old one was connected.

Samsung refrigerator defrost problem

Check the defrost drain hose. If it is plugged, the water from defrosting has no place to go, so defrosting doesn't do much.

Also, make sure you have power to the defrosting circuit (you may have a problem with the wiring). The simplest and safest means is to do a continuity check of the wires between the control board and heater with the refrigerator unplugged, or unplug the heater connection to the control board and measure the resistance of the heater through the connector(s). If it is open or very high, examine the wire terminals for corrosion. If the defrost control board is separate from the rest of the refrigerator control system, check for power coming into the board.

Replace the thermistors #4 and #5 . 4 is the white bullet looking piece on top of the coils inside the freezer , with 2 white wires . 5 is at the bottom of the freezer , on the left side . These thermistors tell the main board , the temp and the board goes into defrost according to temp the thermistors "tell it " .

GE GSS25KGSAWW side by side refrigerator not cooling properly. We pulled the defrost heater out after thawing the freezer and the glass tube is discolored but I get continuity reading across it. Should I...

Hello,

Since the heater has continuity it is good and does not need to be replaced, the other parts that can make a ref. not defrost are the defrost thermostat or the defrost control (mother) board.

To check the defrost thermostat it must be checked when cold, when cold it should have continuity on it. The defrost thermostat is in the freezer clipped to the TOP of the evaperator coil usually on the right side...this is what it looks likeoldtech2332_122.jpg

If the defrost thermostat has no continuity when cold it is bad and thusly the problem...if it is good and has continuity and already having determined the defrost heater is good..the problem is going to be the motherboard since a part of it is the defrost control.it is the back of the ref.on the left.

The part numbers are

DEFROST THERMOSTAT...... WR50X10068

MOTHER BOARD..... WR55X10942

Defroster isn't working on GE Frig model

Hi,
I'm Leo
First I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if freezer control is turned WARMER, which makes the Ref. colder
Also this might be a common Defrost problem, Ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

GE GSH22KGM Frig not defrosting again

I would suggest replacing the # 4 thermistor , which is a 1 " long white piece with 2 white wires attached , clipped to the top of the coils . This thermistor , tells the main control board , the temperature of the coils and the board decides what to do next , such as defrost , end defrost cycle . Also , replace the defrost thermostat , the 1 inch cylinder with 2 wires going to it , which is also clipped onto the coils . This thermostat , cuts the heater off when it reaches a certain temperature , to keep the food from defrosting . It may also help , to replace the # 5 thermistor , which is below the coils , slid into a housing , with 2 white wires going to it also . This thermistor , tells the board , the actual freezer temp , so the compressor will cycle off/on , and the fan speed also . All 3 parts , are relatively not expensive . Be sure to get wire connectors because they do not come with these parts .

I have a maytag plus model #msd2758drb, the freezer builds up with ice really quick, then the frigerator warms up want can i do?

You have a problem with your defrost system. The defrost heater is not coming on to thaw the frost that builds up on your evaporator coils. This restricts the airflow to the ref side. You will need to find out which component needs to be replaced it could be your defrost control, defrost thermostat, or defrost heater. The heater and thermostat are located behind the freezer panel. The heater can be ohmed out with a meter and tested for continuity, the thermostat will usually be popped out if its bad. If both of these parts are good then the problem is your defrost control, my model look-up is down right now but it could be a circuit board or just a standard "timer" style control.

Hope this helps _MJ_

How to checkeverything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. Inmost newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicksand everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replacethe timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn thetimer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
