well, the 40gig model of the ps3 can have either the dual laser lens, or the single laser lens in it. they started out with the KES-400A single laser lens, but somwhere along the line, they started putting the KES-410A dual laser lens in them, which is supposed to be a more reliable laser lens, but they do fail as well. the most common reason why a ps3 won't read ps3 games and bluray discs, but will read dvds or cds is because they have a red diode that only reads dvds and cds, and a blue diode that reads bluray and ps3 game discs. i would say your blue diode has kicked the bucket and needs to be replaced. you will either need to send the system to sony for repair, or to a third part company to have it replaced, or you can replace the laser lens assembly yourself
1. download and install a psn game or game demo
2. put in the disc of the game or video you want to play or watch
3. load the psn game or demo as if you were going to play it
4. quit the demo as soon as you get to the start menu of it
5. go and play or watch the game or video you wanted to, sucka, cause it works now!!!
I hope this works for you, and if it does, spread the word!
ok I got your problem very clear I do sell bluray drives on ebay and I do buy lasers from china but I don't sell then on ebay I use them for my own playstations I do fix then and I do sell some of then on ebay and some here where I live and let me tell you what is going on your problem is with your laser yes it still be your laser I know you replaced it but the laser you get is not a new laser no matter what the seller tell you is not new is a second hand laser from china and some lasers are like that they do play blurays but they don't play regular dvd's some they do play regular dvds but they don't play blurays or games some they do play all type of media I been lucky in getting those second hand because I have order so far 60 lasers and only 4 out of 60 are like this so what you have to do is take the laser out again and contact the person who sell it to you tell him what is going on I am sure he knows that this can happen and don't worry about getting a second hand laser because no body can get new ones exept sony thrust me I have friends in china and sony is getting the lasers from china also but they get then new and all no matter who sell then on ebay all are second hand so don't belive what they say because a lot of sellers are saying that there lasers are new and they are not if he returns your money get back to me I can get you a good one that plays everything
I had the same issue with my 60GB model, but I did not open up the case. Sony will fix your PS3 (no matter the warranty) for $150.
To me, I would rather spend $150 by getting the blu-ray drive replaced than a whole new system.
It's actually a very fast turnaround time. They send you a box which most people call the "coffin", you put your ps3 inside and take it to the post office. Pretty quick and painless from my experience.
