Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Dell 5200series(Ithink) w/Windows XP -is 5 yrs old - 28GB on hard drive w/approx. 18 GB available.I recently added 512KRAM to go along w/existing 256K RAM - I am on dial up - Ihave used Reg Cure to look for system problems ------ the problem I am having is 1- that it is slow accessing sites- when I get to a site I have no problem interacting and I can have 2-3 sites running at a time -----and 2--- when I turn puter on - I have AOL - the volume says "welcome" but no longer says "you got mail", if I access - say a youtube spot - it will load - but the play back is extremely slow- a 2 min clip takes forever ----- it will play maybe 2-3 seconds of audio/video at a time and then pauseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for a minute or 2 - then 2-3 seconds again - then pause------------if i try to use the music function - same results- access is slow - when a station is selected - 2-3 seconds of music then 1-2 minutes of "pause" then 2-3 seconds, etc. I have tried adjusting my disk space in internet settings from anywhere from 4000MB to 20000MB and same results - another symptom going on in here is if i hit control/alt and tap delete ----- task manager pic no longer comes up but it does delete the task running. Any clues?

Hi Donna. The properties of your hard drive shown when you open Computer (My Computer in Windows XP) help you to see your used and free space. Even though your hard drive has a capacity of 160 GB, useable space is always less because the operating systems were designed to allocate a percentage of the total to be used for various operations necessary for smooth sailing. Right clicking the hard drive icon and selecting properties opens to you tools used to keep your hard drive healthy along with information regarding the hard drives % of use. Try it out if you haven't already. Good Day

DELL 5150 hard drive error 7

Error code 7 means that your hard disk drive failed and is defective. As for reloading windows XP, I wouldn't. It's not supported by Microsoft any more. I would load Win 7 after replaceing the drive.

Dell Optiplex GX1 not recognizing all hard drives.

Hello,
If you connect the drives using one single ribbon cable with two connectors on it then you need to set the drives to Master/Slave using the jumpers on the drives. Master being your OS drive.
If you are running a very old Operating System, make sure it can support a 20GB drive.

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. Dell Vostro 200 desktop with Windows XP is not able to handle two

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.

How to detect two IDE drives with same brand

You need to set one of the drives to be 'master' and the other to be 'slave'.
This is done by positioning jumpers on the back of the harddrives.
Pretty sure that on the drives is explained somewhere how to position the jumper, for several options.

Good luck,
Please post some feedback.
