First step is to make sure if the modem is functional. This can be done by connecting your computer to modem and check if you are able to log on to internet.
Second step is to connect the cable which previously connected to computer to Router's WAN port not LAN
Third step is to power cycle the modem and router that is power off and on both modem and router
Last step is connect router to your computer with new ethernet cable using one of the LAN ports of the router. There are usually three or four LAN ports on Router!
