Won't hold a charge

Hi there,
My Garmin 660 runs out of juice about a half hour into any trip. I keep it in it's holder attached to my cigarrette holder but it is not charging and seems to be using up a charge very quickly. Do you have any suggestions?

the battery is about a year old, has not been used very often during this time.

  • mermaidgal Sep 12, 2008

How do I get it open? Where do I buy a batter?

  • mermaidgal Sep 12, 2008

Right now I have it connected to my PC, prior to this it has just been sitting. Is it charging when connected to the computer? I pressed the reset button and it flashed on fro a few seconds and now is back to showing that it is connected to the computer. What is the 2.7? How do I do that?

  • mermaidgal Sep 12, 2008

I have ordered a battery and hope that will take care of the problem. Thank you

If you have had it longer than 6months and the unit was in the windshield during the Hot Days
or direct sun light this will kill the rechargeable batteries that are inside.. You can go tho the website and order a replacement battery pack for your GPS... That all>;)

buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=31946

your model is discontinued but they will still have the part

Thank you Jayson

May be your charger is not working correctly, try a different charger that will determine the charge and in case you have the same issue then its the battery replace it.

Cheers

Hey

How old is the garmin? The battery is probably going bad and would need to be replaced.

Try a wall charger for the garmin, you could also contact garmin about the problem, if its under warranty they might offer you a replacement or a repair plan.

    heres the charger

    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sk...

If the battery is bad, the charger won't do much good. the battery is build in and is not easyly replaceable the unit needs to be taken apart and the battery replaced by soldering it off the connectors.

  • Ekse Sep 12, 2008

Seems I was wrong about soldering the battery, seems this model has a easy connector.

    Heres the battery

    http://www.batteryship.com/htmlos/htmlos...

I'l see if I can find instructions and or a cheaper battery.

  • Ekse Sep 12, 2008

you can update the unit with the webupdater here

    http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdat...

  • Ekse Sep 12, 2008

There was a cheaper battery on Ebay - Click here ebay product

  • Ekse Sep 12, 2008

Theres a replacement guide available for series 3 and 5 garmins at

    http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic...

I don't have a clear guide for your model.

  • Ekse Sep 12, 2008

You could ask the ebay seller for replacement instructions, he might have some details on that. But basicly:

    1. Unit needs to be opened

    2. Battery needs to be disconnected (2 or 3 pin connector)

    3. Battery needs to be removed from the case

    4. New battery on old batterys place

    5. Connect the new batterys connector (2 or 3 pin)

    6. Put the garmin back together.

    Thats about it.

  • Ekse Sep 12, 2008

On a final note, If you looked at the battery posted by Kindofcheap, that doesn't fit your model.

Please see the links I posted for you, the ebay one is the cheapest available and works with your unit.

Let me know if you need anything else.

    Thanks,

    Ekse

When resetting garmin 660 by holding reset for 2 hr 30 min, does it matter whether it is on or off or plugged into charger?

hi jeff,

im not sure why your holding the power button for 2.5 hours, but any reset should be done while unplugged

now, with the unit off, press and hold the lower left corner of the screen...keep holding ti while you hit the power button to turn it on...keep holding it till you see the screen that asks if you really want to delete all data (this will erase you saved info) select yes the follow the onscreen instructions.

I've borrowed a friend's Garmin for a trip and when I use the car charger, it doesn't display anything. Once I disconnect, it becomes visible again. I'm going on a long trip and worry. ...

Assuming there is power at the cigarette lighter jack - turn the Nuvi off - then connect the charger. It should display charging battery or charging complete.
If nothing - does it charge with the wall charger? If so check the fuse in the car charger - it's usually in the tip of the charger which can be turned to get the fuse out.

How do I turn off our garmin nuvi?

Hi,

Reset button behind the Antenna, press this in for a few seconds.
Use the Web-updater at Garmin, to update it too,
Jack it to a PC and run the update,
If still playing up, Use the Firmware update at Garmin for it,
(( google Garmin 660 software updates ))
Should be good then

Richard.

Garmin nuvi won't turn on

folks, the garmins have an on-board battery that needs to be powered up (at least occasionally) via the usb port - like from your computer. just using the dc car power cord does nothing for this battery. i've had this exact same problem on both my 760 and 780 nuvi units. fixed it using the usb charge. seems to run down differently for all the various nuvi models. my regular charge will hold for 7 hours on my old 660, my 760 and 780 work about 5 hours. my 'power up' failed on the 660 after 10 months with no internal battery charge, but the 7xx models only took about 5-6 months to 'fail.' hope this helps. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa

Are you running this unit while it is charging? Does the Nuvi 660 have a sufficient charge?

Try to do a hard reset on the unit.
