Canon 40D focussing problem

I have many pictures out of focus - working with the central focus point only. I found out that the central focus point is much bigger than the red light marker and focuses closer objects, outside, but relative near of the red rectangle. Did anyone experienced something similar, or my camera have a problem? (sorry for the very basic english)

I have the same problem. I have contacted Canon and I am getting ready to box up my 40D and send it in for repairs! At this point, my XT is doing a much better job!

I have the same problem with my new EOS 40D. Regardless what focusing point I choose the object is always out of focus. The results are much worse than with point and shoot cameras.

Thank you for your detailed answers. I know the antialias is very strong on this camera type, but the sharpening of a soft image is worse than a good start image. Not the aa is my problem: I'm focussing on an eye (a not moving person), but the focus is on the peak of the nose. I'm focussing a bird which covers entierely the central focus point marker, but the focus is on some near tree branches. I do not understand why the focus marker have different size / shape than the focus sensor itself or why the sensor fix the focus on small closer details in its border zone, as I have enough contrasty objects covering almost all the focus sensor surface (must read the marker surface). Is there my camera defective, is it a wrong design / firmware or is a "feature"? It is not a front focussing issue, because shooting a plane map or object, the focus is ok. On the other hand, I have the same problem on my all three lens: 70-200 f4/is, 24-105 and sigma 105. With my old 400D I had not so fast, but much more accurate focus, same my daughter with 350D.

Yes, I do have the same experience but it happens to be solved using the AI focus mode instead the single shot one. We also have to know that the AA of this camera is stronger than the previous generations of XXD cameras.
For the ones saying about not being as sharp as the point an shot, take into account that you can set the sharpening to be as strong as you want with a limit of 7 degrees of sharpening in camera. (but it only works with jpegs)

Help with focusing with 7d

What is the focussing problem?
The EOS 7d is usually an autofocus camera with a 19-point
focussing system.
Are you trying to override the focus manually?
This is not recommended.
Much of the purchase price is based on the speed and
accuracy of the focus.
Please restate your problem with more detail and information.

Does the camera still work even thought it does a small extra adjustment?

Are your pictures fine and is the camera working ok otherwise?

If your pictures are good then theres noting to worry about.

if on the other hand you can't take pictures, try reseting the camera, there should be a small reset hole in it.

Canon 40D will no longer work if on auto focus. Will only take a picture in manual focus.

When in auto focus does the lens try to focus?
Sounds like your lens is the problem, you can try to clean the gold contacts on both the camera and on the lens with a pencil eraser (Make sure not to get any eraser dust in either the camera or the lens). If you can try a different lens on your camera and see if that one will work.
Please post a comment if you need more help on this.

Which of the three options of focusing to use on my canon 40d

Okay, since you're photographing subjects that aren't moving very quickly, start with the One-Shot AF. Use Manual AF point selection to choose the focus point yourself. If left to its own, the camera probably will focus on the nearset object.

How do I go go to a central focus point vs. having multiple focus points fire? I just got this lens, and don't see that the instruction book came in the box!

This is done in your camera not with the lens. On most Canons there is a button with a picture of a box with focus points in it. You hold this down whilst turning your main dial (the one you use to change shutter speed) this will cycle through your focus points. On the 40D and most other cameras this button should be at the very right hand top corner of the back of your camera.

Auto focus not working

The lens AF mode is not working. What lens is it you are using?

It is not a camera issue but a lens issue. Try a different lens to be certain.

Only one auto focus point

have you already pushed the focus point button - top right, under your thumb and then push the set button? Pushing the set button will flip between only the centre focus point and all 7.
