I just got my sister's TI-89 calculator and I don't know how to use it. I'm trying to find out how to graph a non-linear inequality. Any ideas?

You can download the manual from the manufacturer's web site at
http://education.ti.com/calculators/downloads/US/Guidebooks/Detail?id=6128

There's also an aftermarket book:

If you're lucky, a local library will have it.

I try to graph an absolute value on my Ti 89 and I put the inequality in right but when I go to graph it my calculator says undefined variable.

If you want to graph the absolute value of a function, feed the function to the absolute value ie graph y= abs(f(x)). The calculator will take care of it. See screen captures where I draw the function y1=x^3-5x^2-3 and y2='x^3-5x^2-3'. On the first graph the function is represented and on the second the function and its absolute value.

The calculator knows how to calculate the absolute value of an expression. The name of the command is abs(

Cannot connect ti 89 to computer. I have installed the correct software from the ti 89 website for my computer and my calculator when I satart ti 89 connect it tells me there is an error.

Check to make sure TI-Connect is looking on the right port, whether USB or serial. If you have a serial cable, you might consider using Ti's Graph-Link software to connect. I have had trouble getting it to work right with TI-Connect. You can find Graph-Link on TI's Education site under Downloads > Connectivity Software. I personally prefer the free program TiLP, which runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux and supports whatever cable you want. Hope this helps!

You create a program by using the program editor. Press the "APPS" key and select "Program Editor".

What type of data graph do you want? The TI-89 can plot Scatter, XYline, Box, and Histgram graphs. Use the "Plot Setup" screen to select the desired plot type.

Half the screen on my TI-89 is black

Hey, i have nearly the same problem and now finally found a solution to it. In my case half of the screen was empty and the other worked correctly AND slight pressure to the frame surrounding the display on the side of the defect half and/or above the display makes the display reappearing again. Because it's annoying if you always have to press with one hand on your calculator while working with it i did the following: Important: Make sure that... ... you have a backup of the data stored on your TI because you could lose them during the following procedure. ... we are really talking about the same problem. ... this hints come without any warranty and you might destroy your calculator completely following this advice. 1. Open your TI 89 as described for example in [1] 2. Take a piece of foam rubber and cut out a stripe with a shape like |_ or "L", about 1cm in width which fits approximately the frame around the display on the the defect side and the top. 3. Place the foam rubber on the silver shield you see after opening the back of your TI. 4. Then you can assemble your calculator again. I hope i could help you!
