Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My dryer smells as if something is burning after running only a minute or 2, and the damp clothes are "smoking" NOT steaming. Vent duct is clean as is lint trap.

I am not sure we have the same dryer but this advice is generic for any dryer. Most people fail to think of a blocked duct system. This will not be resolved with cleaning just the lint trap and the inside of machine. You need to detatch the back of the dryer clean that and clean the duct system as far up as you can reach. If your duct system has a lot of turns or is very long you would benefit from calling one of those companies that specialize in cleaning dryer systems. You have all of the classic systems of a blocked duct and are potentially setting yourself up for a fire. I think the European brands like Miele and Bosch are especially good at detecting a blockage and shutting off which is actually a good thing. Unfortunately they get a bad rap and people try to convince you that is how Europeans like their clothes-damp. Save the service call charge and clean your system first. I did today and I finally have dry clothes!!

Kandjmorse,
huuum At your service!

You told me that your dryer smells as if something is burning after running only a minute or 2, and the damp clothes are "smoking" NOT steaming. Vent duct is clean as is lint trap

I find two answers are possibilities for this situation.
1.If it is an electric dryer one of the connecting wires to the element is lose or not snug, and the electricity is arcing across the gape, so you smell a tiny bit of burn.
2. Or the thermostat is malfunctioning and you need hands on service to diagnose and change this part.
DO NOT RUN THE DRYER!
It is a fire hazard!

Sounds like a Thermostat problem to me!!

How old is the appliance?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more it may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliances are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!

And can pay for them selves in only a few years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need a hands on tech for this repair!

You will be fine
Bless You huuum

DRYER SMELLS LIKE BURNING:

Answer:First, Stop using your dryer until this problem is resolved. This is a fire hazard and could cause a fire.
Your issue is more than likely alint build up problem. The lint that comes off of your clothes as you dry them becomes trapped in the dryer itself and in the venting duct that connects from the back of the dryer to the wall.
The first thing to do is todisconnect powerby unplugging the dryer cord from the wall. Slide the dryer away from the wall slowly.Remove the hose ductthat attaches to the back of the dryer. Look inside the hose duct and if you see heavy lint build up, that is most likely your problem. If you have a shop vac vacuum or similar, use the long wand attachment tovacuum out the lintthat is in the duct. The best way to do this is to completely remove the vent duct from the wall and dryer.Vacuum the inside of the ductto clean it out. Alsovacuum in the vent hole in the wallwhere the duct attaches to the wall and remove any lint that may be blocking air flow. Put everything back together and test your dryer to see if the burning smell has been resolved.

NOTE: There may be heavy build up of lint deep in the wall. You can purchase aDryer Vent Cleaning Kitthat may make your job of cleaning the vent much easier. However, it may be best to call a Dryer Vent Cleaning Company as they have the equipment that is needed to remove all lint in the wall that could cause a fire. We know everyone wants to save money and "do it yourself" but when it comes to safety, money should not be an issue.
If the burning smell is still present, you cantake the dryer apartandtry vacuuming out any lintthat may be built up on the inside of the dryer. Do a search for your dryer model name and number onGoogleto see how your particular dryer model is disassembled. If you are not comfortable taking your dryer apart then it is advised to call an appliance repair company as your issue can cause a fire.
There are other reasons for your dryer to have a burning smell. There could be an electrical issue inside your dryer. This may mean that a certain part or electrical board is going bad or is bad. Another common reason for this issue is something is near the heating element inside the dryer and causing the burning smell. If you have an older clothes dryer, it may be possible that the components are past its life span and it is time to purchase a new dryer. If you want your dryer to be looked at by a professional, it may be time to call an appliance repair company to come out and check your dryer.
There are plenty of videos that can help you to determine what may be wrong with your dryer. There are a few videos below that may assist you with troubleshooting and disassembling your dryer.
The belt
In some dryers, a belt turns the drum. This belt can slip off, which can cause it to start melting. Because it is usually made of rubber, it will then produce a very strong, unpleasant burning odor. If your drum is not turning smoothly or properly, and you notice a bad burning smell, your belt is probably damaged.
THE MOTOR
Dryers have motors, and as they age, they can burn out just like any other motor. This causes a very strong burning smell, and your dryer will either not run at all, or it will run poorly and with a lot of noise.

It is common to have a slight burning smell in the dryer immediately following a clean and inspect of the cabinet. Although you may have cleaned the dryer cabinet interior and the ventilation ducting, dust particles often get stirred up and will settle on the heating element. These small particles will eventually burn off and should not create any hazards to the operation of the appliance. Allow to run for a few minutes and monitor. The smell should go away.

I have just lit a coal fire for the first time in the living room, all is OK ecept when I went into the bedroom (2 floors above) I could smell smoke quite badly Any advice?

The chimney needs to be 3 feet taller than the highest point of the house . If you are running the clothes dryer, bathroom vent fan, or exaust hood in kitchen it makes a vacum in the house that can draw smoke into the house down the chimmney . I think when you burn wood or coal in a house it is pretty hard not to be able to smell it. Our house and clothes do not smell like smoke any more since we stopped burning wood.

Sounds like the vent is clogged with lint. You should have the vent cleaned once a year to keep the appliance operating properly. Also, make sure there are no kinks in the vent line.
Good luck!

LG Gas dryer doesn't dry clothes in one cycle

Have you checked your outside vent while it was running to see if the dryer was venting 100%. If your clothes are hot and humid I would say clean your vent pipe has a blockage and needs to be cleaned out. Also as far as the burning smell you could take the front off (unplug first) the dryer of by removing 4 screws one above and one below the latch and two at the bottom and there are two clips one at the top left and right push in with a puddy knife and lift the top up a couple inches and lift the front up off the bottom holders. Then you will have access to vacuuming the lint that is floating around the burner.
