This is a common problem with this model of printer. The scanner optic degeneration is due to dust buildup on mirrors and lenses. Since the most vulnerable mirror reflects its laser beam to the magenta and yellow toner cartridges, red tones are the first to show fading. Colors shift: purples turn blue and oranges turn yellow. The printer optics will need to be cleaned by a compliant technician to resolve this issue as it means dismantling your printer and cleaning the mirrors and lenses in the optic section to fix the problem.
It is possible to clean the lenses and mirrors (with care not to scratch the surface silvered mirros AND not to disturb eany of the optical components)
There's quite a bit of dismantling to do to get to the laser unit, but if you work methodically (and remember to double check everything when you are 'rebuilding' the printer) it is certainly possible.
This is a common problem and also appens with HP Color Laserjet 1600, 2600, 2605, CM1017, and Canon LBP5000.
Sherry, in all probability it is the "scanner assembly" HP can fix this for $279 in the US using HP Express exchange 1 day ship, this was the result of their active chat. I am having the same problem and am going to dismantle the printer myself to see if I can't clean the scanner mirror myself. If you search the following words on google you will find some info, fading red tones laser jet 2605, one of the first results is a page on the HP site specifically on laserjet printers. I wish I had a quick fix that would help; however, a new cartridge won't help!
you have to clean the image mirrors you can find a how to guide on hp's web site titled "fading red tones on color laserjet2600' process takes about 30mins to do.
well, the density is actually a combination of two aspects. The original document settings, especially in color transforms. Usually, the software will have a transform specific for the printer. In my experiences, trying to tweak the printer for each print job, can cause extreme frustration. Check the software manual for settings for your printer, and perhaps you'll get closer to this solution.
