I formatted the hard drive because it was corrupted. What format does the drive need to be? I did it before I researched the problem.

For Windows XP users, the RD1020/RD1070/RD1080/RD1090 uses FAT format. FAT 32 WILL NOT WORK. But there's a good(bad for you) chance you deleted system files when you formatted it, and it won't work now at all.
In that case installing the firmware might help(if you can get it to communicate with the PC at all). Do it either with the CD you should have got with it, or through RCA website - http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/Cultures/en...
