Hello,
you have the 5500 right (just making sure) , so what you need to do is open the printer access door and remove both ink cartridges, you need to push a hidden button which is directly above the place where the black ink cartridge should be. when you feel it, push it firmly and you will feel the printhead comes off, after that you can remove the printhead

Unable to align cartridges on Canon Pixma MP600 all-in-one printer. When trying to print many black streaks obscure printed area.

This sounds like a printhead problem.
The first thing I would try is to clean the printhead. Remove the cartridges and store them (stretch a piece of plastic electrical tape over the ink cartridge hole to keep the ink from drying out).
Remove the printhead and set it in warm distilled water and let the printhead sit overnight.
Remove the printhead from the water and blot the water with a clean lint free dry cloth (do not rub the printhead and contacts, or damage could occur. Set the printhead aside to air dry.
Once the printhead is dry, reinsert the printhead, remove the tape from the ink cartridges, reinsert the ink cartridges. Test print. This should clear the problem.
We can try a more aggressive cleaning solution of the distilled water doesn't clear the problem.
Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks.

Unit switched off mid way through printing. Unable

Try removing the printhead and power up again, sometimes the printhead goes out and won't let it power up. If so you will need a new one, QY6-0049-000 aprox. $70.00 now.

Remove printhead

The User Guide (PDF installed on installation) has specific instructions, summarized below:
1 Make sure the EasyShare AiO is on.
2 Open the printer access door. The carriage moves to a center position.
3 Wait until the printhead is idle and silent, then pinch the pinch latch on the ink cartridge with your thumb and forefinger and lift it out of the print head. Remove both ink cartridges.
4 Unlatch the printhead by pressing the button in the upper-left corner of the carriage
5 Remove the old printhead.
6 Remove the printhead from its bag
7 Remove and discard the clear plastic casing and the orange protective cap.
8 Place the printhead into the carriage.
9 Push against the back wall of the printhead until it clicks into place.
