On the hampton bay remote control fan and light module, i do not have wiring diagram. from my ceiling box, i have a red, a black, a white, and a bare copper wire. I think it is because the light switch has a 3 way switch, but i do not know what to connect it to. the module only has a black and a white wire for incoming wires. can you help?

Unfortunately, Mark it's really not as simple as it sounds, to connect the wires properly. Because of that third red traveler wire for the 3-way switch. Actually, ceiling fans don't work well, when a 3-way switch is involved, because it was designed only for lighting convenience. When the fan is turned on, the other ceiling lights will start to glow, whether they are ON or not..

You would be much better served if you can locate another line to come off of and wire to that. Of course,y you won't have the convenience of a wall switch to operate it. But, that's what the pull chains on the fan are for.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Something is fishy here. First: Do you have 2 locations w/ switches or not? If you do then we' ll need to run some tests. You'll need a pigtail neon voltage tester. ($3. or $4. @ Home Depot or Lowe's) test the 3 wires in the ceiling box as follows: touch the pigtail tester to the black & white wire. Did you get a glow? Now try it again on the red & white wire. If no glow on either black or red to white then flip one of the 3-way switches (it doesn't matter which) & test the ceiling wires again. If you had a glow to black & white or red & white before turning the switch you should now have no glow. If you had no glow you should now have a glow to one of the 2 wire sets. Cap off the OTHER one (red or black) because you will Not be using it. Now at the ceiling (with the power OFF!) connect White from the fan to the ceiling White w/ a wire nut & Black & Blue from the fan to ceiling Black or Red (whichever wound up having the power from the 3-way switches. If this doesn't work you will need to call in an electrician because wiring these 3-way switches correctly is one of the most complex things electricians do.
Good Luck!

Wall switches do not control fan

Some fans will not operate without the remote, however, I'm not sure if the Hampton Bay brand is one of these or not. Below is how you will bypass the remote if the fan will operate without the remote.

You can try disconnecting the receiver in the canopy of the van (the cover that fits snug to the ceiling) once you have shut off the power source remove the canopy and find the remote receiver.

Most likely it will be a rectangular box with white, black, and blue or red wires attached. Disconnect all wires from the receiver and lay it to the side.

Now reconnect the wires directly to the fan, white to white, black to black, if you have a red wire (or a second black wire) in the ceiling box connect it to the blue wire from the fan.

If you do not have a red wire (or second black wire) in the ceiling box, connect the black and blue wire from the fan to the single black wire in the ceiling box. This method will require you to pull the chain to operate the fan separately.

How to wire a remote control ceiling fan, without using remote.

If you don't want the to use the remote you don't have to, but you don't have enough wires to switch the upper light, the lower light, and the fan. You can, however, switch the upper and lower lights together if that's okay. In order to do that you'd connect the white from the ceiling box to the white (neutral) on the fan, then the green from the ceiling box to any green(ground) wires on the fan, then the black from the ceiling box to the black(motor) from the fan, then the red from the ceiling box to the blue and orange (lights) from the fan. I'm assuming that the black and red in the ceiling box are also in the switch box where the fan/light control switch is going. Those are the ones you'll connect to the controller.

Wiring ceiling fans to wall switch

Hi Bigelow,

You need two switches.  It sounds like the Electrician set up the junction box for two circuits(Lights and Fans).  i say this because your supply has 4 wires, Red , Black, White and Bare. We may be able to oversome this with one Lutron Switch. Allow me to investigate, and I will be back.

Installing ceiling fan with two switches AND a remote

in your ceiling box should be three wires. a red goes to the three way switches, a black goes to the hot and the white is the neutral. the fan wires are black, blue and white. since you have a remote, connect the [fan] blue & black together with the [line] black. connect all white wires together. the remote will now ramp up your lights from off to full on and the fan remote will let you choose lo med high and off. just tape up the red wire in the box.
