Question about Apple iMac G4 Desktop

Imac g4 cd drive

I just replaced the hard drive on my g4 imac(flat panel). Everything works fine except the cd-dvd drive. it doesn't open, nor does it show up on system profiler. Also, during start up the grey apple logo changed to a 'no' sign, but then completed the startup without further ado.

Thanks for your help. Fortunately for me, the old drive died slowly and I was able to rescue my critical data and such onto my laptop via firewire. So, when I couldn't get the DVD drive to open, I used the fire wire connection to install OS X 10.4.11 - I suspect this is probably the root of the start up oddness. I figured I would try a reinstall once I got the DVD up and running. And yes, I've got the tools & the anti-static band -- my last repair was the hard drive on my ibook (my first was a RAM upgrade on an original Mac).

Last night I doubled checked all the connections(data and power), and this morning the DVD drive made furtive noises as the imac started up (progress?) -- but no joy. I'm concerned that it didn't like being turned upside down and something came loose inside.

    Thanks for the help-I'm stumped.

Thanks-- That confirms what I've been thinking -- guess I was hoping for an easy alternative.

This occurring after you changed your hard drive would suggest something has moved. The fact the drive does not show up in the profiler would say to me there is a connection issue. The system error could be related the the new drive you put in. There are a lot of variables you need to isolate before you move forward.

The new hard drive you put in for it to start up it must have already have had a system on it?
    What OS is on it?

The other problem is you need to get the DVD drive going to be able to fix the hard drive! The first thing you need to do is go over the instalation process you went through when you put the new drive in. Re-seat the DVD drive connector making sure all other connectors are secure and cables taped down.

If you have a static disscharge band you should where it and use the correct tools. The imac is quite fiddly to work in. And you do not want to zap your logic board.

It;'s not a great Idea flipping the mac over they have a special stand to put them on when working on them. But it should be able to cope with it. Your mac is relatively old now. With all the moving around it could have just given up the ghost.

They are quite tricky to work on with the hard drive sitting on top and the cables running over and down the side there is a stack of heat generated there. Just make sure you put ll the thermal back in. If it's not a miss seated connection it could be a number of things. Cable, heads. Trouble shooting is quite tricky. As it is a desktop, in a lot of cases it is cheaper to buy an external DVD reader/writer. They are faster now!

You should be able to install OK when it is in terminal mode. You could run disk utility but more than likely you'll have to run the installation again.

Sorry, not much help.

It can not find the hard drive or the startup folder on the hard drive. Try and fix that by putting in the original boot cd/dvd and repair and choose your hard drive start up folde as boot device. If you can not your hard drive may have died.

Sounds like a kernel panic code. You may be missing a piece of the OS code due to a Hard Drive error from a power issue or whatever. You may need to reinstall your OS. Start up from the cd and save all your data you can to a flash drive or external hard drive and then do a clean install.

My G4 1.25ghz with 1 gb ram plays abc video slow.

Hello, sorry you are having trouble,
There are so many variables when it comes to Video play back on a Mac..
Yea, 1.25 Ghz with 1 GB of Ram answers most questions, yea, it should play OK,
BUT:
  • Is the video on a CD or DVD ? well, these iMacs don't have a very fast optical drive.
  • How much room do you have on your internal hard Drive, if it's too full ( more than 80% full ) then you will suffer read/write performance.
  • Is the video on an external harddrive, is it a USB drive? the USB on the iMac G4 is USB 1.1, 11Mbit/sec, way too slow to play a big video smoothly.
  • Just what is the size of the video, is it like that for all of them or just one, might it be a HD video with high frame rates?
  • What version of the MacOS X do you have installed? If you installed Leopard 10.5 on the iMac G4, nothing will run smoothly,
  • Are you playing this video over a network? forget it it's got to be on the internal or a FireWire external disk otherwise it will stagger...
Well, there you go, I know, it's so easy to say Hey man, just get a new Mac and everything will be fine... But that machine is going on 6 years old now, Video technology has not stood still.....

''imac g4 does not see dvd drive after Xferring files and setting

when booting in os x after the first boot chime immediately hold down keys <apple, option,o,f> all at the same time and allow computer to boot to open firmware once there type "reset-nvram" exactly like that but without quotation marks and press enter once it returns to command prompt type "reset-all"and press enter (you must have the "-" in between the commands) the computer should restart if not when the command prompt returns type "reboot" and hit enter ..... also you can check the drive status by going to "system profiler" in apple drop down menu--->about this mac-->more info or applications folder-->utilities folder--->system profiler then selct disk burning under hardware in the list on the left

? imac g4 ? problem starting

This looks to be a hard drive issue....if you are familiar with the machine enough to take off the bottom plate.....requires a torx tool. I would take off the bottom plate and disconnect the hd, and then see if the machine will boot to cd...if it will then boot to cd then it is a hard drive... i would be careful though as there is a pad on the processor that cools it and if it becomes dislodged you can overheat the processor....

Install your startup CD and restart the computer holding down the "C" if your computer starts off of it, the CD player is okay and you have a software problem, if does not start off the CD the CD/DVD needs to be replaced

My imac g4 isn't reading the dvd/cd drive at all

it won't read it because the new os disk is double layered and the g4 drive you have probably won't read double layered dvds.  best solution is to buy or borrow an usb external dvd drive.  i did this last week and it worked fine.
