My DELL XPS dimension Gen 4 wont boot up. The amber light is steady and no diagnostic lights are lit on the back. The processor fan is going at maximum speed. Before this problem I could not plug in a...

The indications are of a NO POST. This can be caused by:
  1. Failed motherboard
  2. Failed Front IO Panel
  3. Damaged IO Panel Cable
If issues connecting USB connections occurred via the front connection, I'd suspect the IO panel as the issue. If the IO panel doesn't resolve, then motherboard is likely failure point.

I need the driver for the SM BUS CONTROLLER ON MY HP Pavilion a1520n. Went to the drivers and downloads for it but it was not on the list on the HP support page.

Double click the SM Bus Controller, go to the Details tab, change the Property drop down box to Hardware IDs, copy the last hardware ID in the list, and then go to http://devid.info, paste in the hardware ID, and then it will bring up a selection of downloadable drivers for that hardware ID. Good luck.

If you have any problems, paste your hardware ID in this thread.

Alternatively go to your motherboard manufacturer website, you might find something there.

I need to replace my optical drive on my 3 year old Dell XPS 210. It is a Hitachi GCC-4244N. Will any drive with this model # work?

Hardware compatibility is wide when it comes to upgrading on a PC. All you need to do is purchase another drive that uses the IDE interface. It will display this on the back of the packaging in most cases with the other technical information.
Replacing it is as simple as opening the case, removing any extra molding on the front to ensure the drive can slide out, and remembering which plugs went were into the drive.
Overall this is a very simple process and a guide to do so can be found here:

BIOS Update, need BIOS-Flash software

typically their should be instructions specific to your motherboard model at the manufacturers website. You will need to have downloaded the new bios.rom file and a small application that does the flash itself.

Usually you wont ever need a bios update unless dealing with enthusiast hardware which is brand new hardware that has just been sold and needs updates regularly.

Need drivers for nikkai usb to serial converter rs232

I purchased the Nikkai USB to RS232 adapter from Maplin and could not get the device working. (Maplin staff not much help!) The lead uses the Prolific PL-2303 device but Prolific do not supply the drivers to end users.
However I found the drivers that appear to work at:

http://www.cooldrives.com/wividrforprc.html

This then recognises the lead as a COM port. So far everything seems to work OK.
(Null modem check and basic 9600 data transfer.)

I hope that helps everybody.

eMachine's customer service was very good last I had occasion to use it. The keyboard that came with a system had a QWRRTY keyboard (E was missing) and I had the new one by 2nd day air with no return needed.

I recommend giving them a shot first since this issue may even be known to them.

I found Cnet's closing paragraph on your machine helpful too:

"We also like, as always, the BigFix application, which provides you with direct support help from Gateway, eMachines' parent company (which is, in turn, owned by Acer).
For the rest of this system's support, eMachines offers one year of parts and labor coverage, as well as 24-7 toll-free phone support. Online you get system-specific support resources, as well, along the lines of driver downloads, live chat, and other features. Because each eMachines is a fixed configuration, any support tech you come across should know exactly what kind of hardware you have, at least out of the box."

Usually a device driver wrong. Check hardware divices. If yellow with exclamation driver needs to be loaded ith correct driver before next crash. Then reboot and test.
