The loud squealing can be caused by a couple of things. The following link explains this to you:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r387833-maytag_washer_squeaking_problem

This is a problem that can be accomplished by the "do-it-yourselfer" if you are mechanically inclined. In addition, a special is required (and recommended) to compress the large spring located under the Brake Stator. If you go to searspartdirect.com and type in your model number, look under the "Transmission" heading and refer to the drawing. There's an excellent illustration of the parts I discuss in the link and how they are assembled.

The spring that you must compress is item number 20.
The brake rotor is item 23.
The snubber is item 24.
The brake stator is item 25.

This can be a challenging repair is you've never worked on a washer before. Now, if you wish to pursue this repairclinic.com is another reputable website that offers some additional assistance that I need not see on the previous website. They offer a service manual (item #1094741) that provides step-by-step instructions on repairs. Maytag provides excellent instructions with their replacement parts, but this manual may come in handy. Additional tools that I would recommend are:

Spring Removal Tool (item #455570) - makes it easier to remove the wash tub suspension springs.
Brake/Bearing/Seal Removal Tool (item #997909) - this tool is required to compress the brake spring.

The following link shows an illustration of tools mentioned:

http://www.repairclinic.com/SmartSearch/SmartSearch.aspx?searchText=maytag+washer+tools

I know this may seem overwhelming, so I would recommend trying to use the recommendations in the first link I provided you on how to quieten the problem first. In some cases, this is all it takes to quieten the problem. It sounds like to me that your brake rotor is glazed over and needs replacement. I hope you find some of this information helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey fernet
I assume that this screeching is just as the spin cycle ends. Do you hear any other sounds during the wash. ?
the most like cause is a bad clutch - clutch slipping - not holding when engage. It may need servicing

GLEH1642DS1 FRONT LOAD STACKABLE WASHER MAKING LOUD THUMPING NOISE IN SPIN CYCLE & SQEALS WHEN i STOP IT

Sounds like you have an unbalanced load. I know this sounds too easy but lots of times this is the issue. If it doesn't help then you could have a bearing issue where the belt goes around a pully under the tub itself. If so you will have to replace the pully itself and perhaps the belt if it's gotten worn too much.

My Performa Top Load Heavy duty (PAV1000AWW) has a loud noice when it is spinning. Just changed the belt but still extremely loud when spinning...any suggestions>

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. Anytime you have noise while spending, loud thumps and noises, it can almost always be traced back to the drive motor. This is what allows the washer to spin, drain, and agitate. You need to check this out first and check your spin bearing as well. I would say one or the other is the reason for your noise.

Maytag Neptune makes loud drums like sound 5 min before it stops.

its probably because of the way the clothes are in it. you have to make sure the clothes arent leaning to one side and that they are evenly set up. otherwise when it goes into the spin cycle itll lean and hit the side of the washers inside and make it shake and do what you said it was doing.

Your machine has a two speed motor. If the motor hums as it tries to spin in the normal cycle, it could be the motor. If there is no noise, it could be a timer related issue.
