Question about Washing Machines
The loud squealing can be caused by a couple of things. The following link explains this to you:
This is a problem that can be accomplished by the "do-it-yourselfer" if you are mechanically inclined. In addition, a special is required (and recommended) to compress the large spring located under the Brake Stator. If you go to searspartdirect.com and type in your model number, look under the "Transmission" heading and refer to the drawing. There's an excellent illustration of the parts I discuss in the link and how they are assembled.
The spring that you must compress is item number 20.
The brake rotor is item 23.
The snubber is item 24.
The brake stator is item 25.
This can be a challenging repair is you've never worked on a washer before. Now, if you wish to pursue this repairclinic.com is another reputable website that offers some additional assistance that I need not see on the previous website. They offer a service manual (item #1094741) that provides step-by-step instructions on repairs. Maytag provides excellent instructions with their replacement parts, but this manual may come in handy. Additional tools that I would recommend are:
Spring Removal Tool (item #455570) - makes it easier to remove the wash tub suspension springs.
Brake/Bearing/Seal Removal Tool (item #997909) - this tool is required to compress the brake spring.
The following link shows an illustration of tools mentioned:
I know this may seem overwhelming, so I would recommend trying to use the recommendations in the first link I provided you on how to quieten the problem first. In some cases, this is all it takes to quieten the problem. It sounds like to me that your brake rotor is glazed over and needs replacement. I hope you find some of this information helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

I assume that this screeching is just as the spin cycle ends. Do you hear any other sounds during the wash. ?
the most like cause is a bad clutch - clutch slipping - not holding when engage. It may need servicing
