i also have a similar problem. when the vehicle turns off, it automatically turns itself to 4W Low, then will not change back into 4W High or Auto. Also, when driven in 4W Low, the vehicle makes a loud popping sound during turns, which sound almost as though the vehicle were being driven with a brake engaged.

Did you put it in nuetral then switch it, wait a few seconds then put in reverse and back up a couple of feet and nuetral again, i had to do this on my explorer sometimes.

Will a transmission from a 1999 ford explorer 4x4 fit in a 1999 ford ranger 4x4

If you have both vehicles there is a code on the door tag that says what trans is in each. The trans units also have tags. The Explorer and the Ranger are pretty much the same so probably will find the units are identical. If one is over drive and other is not then will not work for sure.

My ford explorer 1998 won't go in reverse. I have transmission fluid in it.

My 1988 Explorer would not go in reverse either after the trans was just rebuilt about a year before. Turned out it was the transfer case. Unfortunately it cost as much as getting the trans rebuilt. I thought the transfer case was just for the 4 wheel drive but it has something to do with the reverse as well believe it or not. Hope that helps.

1998 ford explorer awd make niose left front wheel, and when all 4 wheels are off the floor and in drive, left wheel apears to ingage and disingage from having power to it

Having owned a trans shop years ago,I would suggest you never engage the front wheels on a 4x4 or all wheel or run any vehicle, off the ground, that has drive axles and cv joints.
You may not have any problems, but without the wheels on the ground, it seems you do.
There is no true 4x4. Only one wheel drives in the front and rear,on any vehicle, except in theory.
Keeping in mind, that most veh have ABS Systems, that control drive and braking systems, your most likely disabling and confusing those systems, when it is off the ground.

1998 Ford Explorer 2 door 4-wheel drive. My

You need to remove the trans pan to inspect the parking pawl and rod. Hopefully you can adjust or repair with trans in your vehicle.

Also don't assume your cable etc is okey. You don't know that. You may be able to adjust it and be okey.

there is a neutral switch tied into the transmission, the transfer case will not shift into 4 hi unless the trans is in neutral or park, and 4low only if the trans is in Neutral and the transfer case is in 4hi. CHECK- transmission neutral switch, transfercase feedback switches.

Grinding in and out of 4 wheel drive

You say 'new' truck, 09? or new used? I have had 3 Fords, 3 w/ manual trans. case, if you go into 4x4 Low range, you must come to a complete stop before shifting the trans. case to 4x4 mode, and I always put trans (automatic) in neutral before slipping into 4x4, it engages smoothly, no grinding. 4x4 high range can be put in while moving, but I would let off the gas pedal, shift to 4x4 high range, then resume accelerating. If there is any grinding going on doing it as above, something isn't right. Check the trans. case fluid level also, to make sure that's not an issue.

My ford explorer wont go into 4 x 4 had the transmission changed last year ??1998 2 door . different trans for the 4 door ??

No same trans. Likely has a stuck transfer case motor. try tapping it with a rubber mallet when someone tries to shift it into 4x4

Looking for trans ID tag on my 95 explorer 4x4

It may or may not have a tag on the side of the transmission case. But, don't worry. You can identify the tranny by the bolt pattern on the tranny oil pan and the shape. Slide under the Explorer and remember the shape of the oil pan and caount the number of bolts in the pan. Or, you can run the VIN number and it will tell you the tranny model your vehicle came with.
