I have the same problem, The monitor goes black and green light is still on. I can turn it off and on again and it keeps going black up to 8 times in a row. Has been doing this since 2004 and has been serviced, monitor replaced and the whole hard drive even replaced. I wonder if Gateway even knows what they are doing.

if you tilt it and look at it from a glare of the light around you do you see any dimmed image?

If you want to check it out its easily done if you look at it very carefully and push the windows Start button on your keyboard to check and see if anything appears. If you can check this I can tellyou what is wrong with it.

I was thinking about your problem, I just had a similar issue and the problem is that the inverter or the power supply with an embedded inverter had gone bad.

The reason it goes black is because the inverter fails to provide power to the LCD Display.

The only way to fix this is to open up the FPD:

*note these are instructions for the most popular FPD 1730*

1.there should be four screws on the back --> plus two large screws that hold the FPD stand and the Monitor together.

2.Open the back by pulling the cover off
Remove 7 screws holding the frame and the power button for the LCD

3.Remove two screws through holding a silver cover and remove cables.(pinkwhite) (blackwhite)
Please note where they belong before removal**

4.On the edges left and right are two screws 4 total ---> remove and remove LCD off of frame**becareful because the backlight Damaging can cause severe damage to your LCD panel.

5.Choose your model
Your FPD has 3 boards (power, inverter(backlights) Logic Video)
replace the inverter with well known good one

Your FPD has 2 boards(Power with inverter on edges, Logic Video)
replace the power board with a well known good one

6.Then do steps 1-5 in reverse order(putting your FPD back together.

I hope this is significant help

pandres, Your monitor will need troubleshooting to find out reason why the 2 "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" fail to remain lighted. They provide "white light" so you can see what is on the lcd panel. Connect a "known good" monitor to your pc to prove monitor is bad. If pc is ok, then your monitor will need repair. This type problem not new and is very common for all brands of ccfl back-lit lcd monitors. Watch some video clips at YOUTUBE that show disassembly and repair of ccfl lcd monitors. Monitor goes blank after 5-10 minutes

You may have a compatibility issue with your monitor. You computer may not be putting out enough power to support your monitor. Check your users manual on your monitor for output requirements. If the monitor's manual has a number to call, call the manufacturer to see if there are any compatibility problems between your computer and your monitor and calling the people who built your computer as well. Get as many scenarios as you can to find a solution. Hoped this helped.

Look for bulged or leaking capacitors on the power supply board. If you can solder, you should be able to replace them with the same type and rating and that may just solve the problem. I've had luck with a couple of dozen monitors so far.

Monitor revives only after cycling the power many times

Unscrew 4 screws on the back side. Place the monitor with the front up and open it along the upper seam. Turn it again and lift the back cover. Shift the inner case "up" and take the button holding plate out - it is being held only by a tape. Inspect it and clean it. You might have to replace the condensers and/or switches on it.

This might solve the problem, but there may be other causes as well.

Good luck!
